Welcome to Week Four the Civil War! After the Election of 1860, it seemed that no matter how much Lincoln assured Southerners that slavery would not be touched where it already existed, war was coming. Sure enough, South Carolina drafted secession documents on December 20, 1860, becoming the first state to leave the Union.

Before shots were fired, however, both sides completely believed they could win a war against the other side in a short period of time. What were the strengths and weakness of both sides? Who held the advantage? In any circumstance, could the Confederacy have won the war?

Okay, pick a side and go for it! As a class, feel free to agree or disagree with your classmates.

I look forward to your thoughts!
