The Art Appreciation LibGuide is available for reputable museum links and painting information, and you can access it through the Start Here module.

For Unit III, your main task is to choose a painting by a local artist. To find one:

Search “your town + local artists/painters”

Check local galleries, museums, and arts councils

Verify the artist with a website, gallery page, or news feature

Use the LibGuide for support, but your chosen artwork must come from a local artist.

ART APPRECIATION CLASS

Unit II Discussion Board-200 WORDS EACH

Please note that there are three posts needed to successfully complete the discussion board assignment.

Post 1: Initial post addressing the discussion board topic is due by the end of day on Saturday.

• Your initial post should be at least 200 words in length.

Post 2: Response post to a classmate is due by the end of day on Tuesday.

Post 3: Response post to a second classmate or the instructor’s follow-up question is due by the end of day on Tuesday.

• If no initial posts exist to allow for a response to be made, you may submit an additional initial post addressing another aspect of the unit topic.

• Feel free to post more responses to classmates as you read, reflect, and contribute to our discussion.

For this discussion, you must use your textbook to select a piece of 2D art that interests you. Any art that is flat (i.e., only has two dimensions), having length and height but no depth, is 2D art. There are many media in 2D art, including drawing, painting, prints, collage, photography/video, graphic design, and animation. Explore the upcoming chapters of the textbook. Find a new-to-you artwork that has not already been used in the discussion.

Choose a work that has meaning to you so you can discuss what you felt when you experienced it.

Next, take a photograph or a screenshot of the 2D work and upload it to the Discussion Board. After identifying the artist and when the work was created, answer each of the following questions. Each answer should be two to three sentences.

· Who is the artist, and when was the work created? What is the meaning of the work to you? (See ”Understanding Art” in the textbook.)

· What is the work’s purpose?

· Why was the work created? (See ”What is Art?” in the textbook.)

· What do you like about the work?

· What do you dislike about the work?

Please include a reference for your chosen textbook artwork. Since later assignments will ask you to locate and cite artworks independently, I encourage you to try and find your chosen artwork on a museum or gallery website rather than citing the textbook. This gives you a chance to practice the reference format you will use throughout the course.

Use the following format:

Artist Last Name, First Initial. (Year).  Title of artwork [Medium]. Museum or Gallery Name, City, State or Country. URL

Example:

Hopper, E. (1942).  Nighthawks [Oil on canvas]. Art Institute of Chicago, Chicago, IL.

https://www.artic.edu/artworks/111628/nighthawks

If you cannot locate the artwork online, you may cite the textbook instead (no problem!).

UNIT IV JOURNAL

Assignment Instructions

The principles of design are organizing principles artists use to arrange the visual elements in their composition. The way an artist may use the principles can have a dramatic effect.

For this journal assignment, you are directed to find two 2D printmaking artworks that make contrasting use of the principles of design. One of your chosen artworks must be from the last 20 years. For each artwork, describe how the artist uses the principles of design discussed in your textbook and lesson. Then compare how your chosen artworks use these principles in different ways. What specific visual differences do you observe?

Please look to online galleries and museums to find your examples. There is a list of museums in the LibGuide for Art Appreciation . Choose from the following five types of prints for your examples: relief, intaglio, screen print, mono print, or lithograph; no digital, ink jet, or glicee prints should be used. You may not use the examples the textbook includes for these concepts. Include images of both artworks in your submission. You must cite and reference the source where you find each artwork image; APA format is required for all citations and references. Your journal should be 500 words or more, not including any headers, title pages, or references.
