Choose one of the following options for your analysis. Using the data included in the file AB202019_Ch14_casemixindex_1996_2018_20190628 CA.xlsx  Download AB202019_Ch14_casemixindex_1996_2018_20190628 CA.xlsx (Please see attachment). Prepare a graphic that compares Your Hospital’s CMI to your benchmark facility, the county’s, and the state’s CMI for the past five years. Only include facilities in your analysis that have data for the past five years.

Evaluate the data contained in your graphic. What types of insights or conclusions can be drawn from this information about your hospital, your benchmark facility, the county, and the state for each year? Was your assigned benchmark facility a good benchmark? If not, which facility in the assigned county would be better?

Prepare a short report that evaluates the possible explanations as for why your facility’s overall CMI was higher or lower than the benchmark facility, the county, and the state average for each year. Include any explanation of outliers that may be in the county.

Case Mix Index (cmi) analysis for Desert Valley Hospital (DVH)

date:

1/15/2020

At the request of the Finance Department we conducted a CMI analysis for Desert Valley Hospital, comparing our CMI data for the last 5 years to Loma Linda University Medical Center (LLUMC), the county of San Bernardino, and the state of California.

We found that we should not benchmark our facility against Loma Linda University Medical Center. LLUMC is a 507-bed teaching hospital who serves as a level 1 trauma center, while DVH is a 148-bed private hospital. The characteristics of the facilities are too different for a meaningful comparison.

A more appropriate choice of hospital to benchmark against is Chino Valley Medical Center. It is an acute care hospital located in San Bernardino county that is like DVH in size and ownership. CVMC is a 112-bed privately owned hospital. When comparing the two hospitals, we can see that DVH’s CMI is similar to CVMC’s.

The county and state's average CMI provide a better benchmark for our facility. Over the past 5 years, both the county and state have experienced a steady increase in average CMI. It is important to note that our hospital's average CMI is rising at a higher pace than both the county and state. This trend should be monitored to ensure our hospital doesn’t become a target for third-party payer reviews, such as Recovery Audit Contractors (RACS).

Hospital

CMI percent Change form 2014 - 2018

DVH

17.78% Increase

LLUMC

23.81% Increase

County Average

12.78% Increase

State Average

9.85% Increase

In the county, both Kindred Hospitals (Ontario and Rancho) were high outliers, while Colorado River Medical Center and Bear Valley Community Hospital were low outliers. When calculating the average of the county, we found the hospitals' CMIs neutralized each other. Therefore, we did not remove them from our study.
