Scenario:  You were recently hired as a medical coder at a large hospital. F.B.  (name changed to protect patient confidentiality), a 75-year old woman,  sees her doctor because she has had chest pain, difficulty breathing, a  cough, and a fever. Her doctor hears crackling sounds in her chest when  she breathes and an x-ray reveals that her lungs are filled with fluid.  The doctor says that L.H. has pneumonia and prescribes antibiotics.  After 5 days her chest feels better, her fever subsides, and she can  breathe easier. Your new boss asked you to prepare a presentation to  detail the pathophysiology of her disorder, as pathophysiology is  critical to coding.

 

1. List the diagnosis.
2. Explain the etiology.
3. Summarize the signs and symptoms of the disorder.
4. Identify which lab tests, etc. the doctor can use to ensure the correct diagnosis.
5. Discuss methods for treating the disorder.
6. List behaviors that help prevent or decrease the likelihood of the disorder.
7. Describe the risk factors associated with the disorder.
