Journal 3 – Rodriguez - “The Achievement of Desire”

SLOs 1, 3, 4, 6

There are 3 parts to this journal entry.  Discuss all 3 in order to earn full credit for this activity.  This is a chapter from Rodriguez's book Hunger of Memory, in which he repeatedly states that this story, although unique to him, is also a story of our common experiences: growing up, leaving home, becoming educated, and entering the world.

Part 1

Look for passages that you could use as evidence that this is an essay that can give you a way of looking at your own life - not just his. Choose one or two and discuss how it/they is/are similar to your life experiences.

Part 2

Look for passages that you could use as evidence that these experiences are specific to his life and explain why.

Part 3

Why might Rodriguez want readers to see his story as one that is common to all of us?  Why might he also want readers to see his experiences as unique?
