Translating Algebraic Expressions

1. Translate the following word phrase into an algebraic expression: nine times the difference of 5 and y.

2. Translate the following word phrase into an algebraic expression: six times four less than three times x.

3. Eric has rock and classical MP3s on his computer. The number of rock MP3s is 3 times more than the number of classical MP3s. Let c represent the number of classical MP3s. Write an expression for the number of rock MP3s.

4. Marcella has 4 fewer male cousins than female cousins. Let f represent the number of female cousins. Write an expression for the number of boy cousins.

5. Jeannette has $5 and $10 bills in her wallet. The number of fives is eight more than five times the number of tens. Let t represent the number of tens. Write an expression for the number of fives.

6. Explain the difference between “4 times the sum of x and y” and “the sum of 4 times x and y.”
