Traumatology Assignments Overview

Throughout EDCO 790, you will conduct a study across the eight weeks of the term on a specific topic and population of interest in traumatology. The purpose of this study is twofold.

· Help prepare the learner for the dissertation requirements of deepening a single topic of interest over a period of time and presenting the findings using more than one modality.

· Deepen the learner’s foundational understanding of trauma counseling

A series of five assignments are integrated across the course modules and weeks, using the scaffolding strategy to give the learner support as new concepts and skills as required for the dissertation. The assignments in this series include: Traumatology Study Foundations Assignment, Traumatology Outline Assignment, Traumatology Annotated Outline Assignment, Peer-Review Discussion: Traumatology Presentation, and Traumatology Paper Assignment. This series of assignments is contemplated to help prepare the learner for the dissertation requirements of deepening a single topic of interest over a period of time and presenting the findings using more than one modality.

Beginning with the Traumatology Study Foundations Assignment, each study assignment will have five core sections: Discussion of the Topic of Study, Population of Interest, Associated Variables, Biblical Integration, and Topics for Future Research. Note that all written assignments in the study should be submitted in a Word (versus PDF) document with Times New Roman 12-point font, as this is recommended by APA.

Module 1: Week 1 – Traumatology Study Foundations Assignment

Module 3: Week 3 - Traumatology Outline Assignment

· The outline will include initial references that support the main points of the outline, with some initial development of topics throughout each of the 5 main sections of the outline.

· The learner will review the webpage covering the APA Research Paper Outline format (provided on the assignment page) to present an outline for the introduction, five sections of the study, and conclusion.

Module 5: Week 5 – Traumatology Annotated Outline Assignment

· The annotated outline is a structured plan for a research paper that builds on the outline of the main sections and sub-sections with brief annotations that describe the purpose, content and references of each part.

· The learner will review the document for Guidance and Example Annotated Outline for understanding and an example to follow.

· The learner will expand on the outline with annotations for at least 3 points with support from peer-reviewed scholarly articles.

Module 6: Week 6 – Peer-Review Discussion: Traumatology Presentation

· The presentation provides an opportunity for scholarly presentation on a topic of interest as a required skill for doctoral learners that is used in the dissertation proposal and dissertation final defense.

· The learner will present their study in a narrated presentation that is developed for a professional audience of emerging experts in the field of traumatology.

Module 7: Week 7 – Traumatology Paper Assignment

· The paper is the culminating assignment for the study conducted during the EDCO 790 course.

Traumatology Paper Assignment Instructions

Overview

This Professional APA style Traumatology Paper Assignment requires a specific focus on a narrow portion of the knowledge gained from this course. This paper builds upon the knowledge gained in the course and is the culmination of the series of assignments that began with Traumatology Study Foundations Assignment, Traumatology Outline Assignment, Traumatology Annotated Outline Assignment, Peer-Review Discussion: Traumatology Presentation, and finally, this assignment, the Traumatology Paper Assignment. This series of assignments is contemplated to help prepare the learner for the dissertation requirements of deepening a single topic of interest over a period of time and presenting the findings in more than one modality.

In this final assignment, the student will summarize the learning from this course and from outside sources to discuss one in-depth topic in traumatology. By this point in the course, the topic should be sufficiently narrowed in both scope and population to one, specific aspect of traumatology. Learners may find that they wish to continue to narrow their topic significantly from the Traumatology Outline Assignment and Peer-Review Discussion: Traumatology Presentation and may do so along with the feedback from the Instructor throughout the course. Since doctoral students are frequently required to write on the same topic, including during the dissertation phase of the program, it is required that information in this paper must demonstrate a deepening view of the scholarship utilized throughout the course. Note: As this is the culmination of the series of course assignments, it is expected that this paper will show further depth of scholarly discourse as built from insight with all of the assignments. It is expected that the paper will show continuation of points made and references used for these previous assignments – the paper will exhibit further depth. This will be considered in examination of the learner’s Turnitin report for the paper. Problem matches on Turnitin would be matches with course work outside what the learner has been building through the course.

Topics should be narrowed to a specific population of interest or compared and contrasted among populations to indicate specific recognition of risk and resilience factors that may play a role in the presentation or treatment of the trauma. The paper should include a scholarly approach to the topic and the following sections: Topic, Population of Interest, Variables Associated with the Topic, and Topics for Future Research.

Instructions Include the following components in your Traumatology Paper Assignment:

· The paper must include the following:

· Professional APA style Title Page

· Professional APA style Abstract

· Professional APA style Heading and Organizations.

· Professional APA style summary introduction, headings, subheadings, transitions, and conclusion.

· Discussion of the Topic of Study

· Introduction to the topic and information of what the current research states regarding what is currently known about the topic. Note: this paper’s audience is a scholarly audience of emerging traumatology experts. Do not include sections of information that should be well-known to this audience.

· Population of Interest

· A specific population of interest and the relevance of studying this population must be discussed.

· Information regarding risk factors, population data (including country or countries of interest), base rate or incidence rate of the topic within the population, and other pertinent information that offers a clear view of topic related to the population of interest for the paper.

· Information regarding the relevance of studying the population could include rationales such as: poor representation of the population of interest in the literature, a personal interest in the population (i.e., ministry or vocation), local community concern, vulnerability issues, etc.

· The section could also note current research on the topic with the population of interest or a similar population or scholarly sources that state there is no research on the topic, further supporting the need for the topic to be studied with the population of interest.

· Variables Associated with the Topic

· This section should include an expansion of the topic that is specific to the population of interest and the factors that affect how this topic in traumatology is experienced by the population indicated.

· Information in this section could include elements such as relevant symptoms, short- and long-term effects associated with the topic, frequently occurring comorbidities, and an overview of recommended treatment methodologies for the type of trauma selected for the focus of this paper. Note: the population of interest must be discussed throughout.

· Biblical Integration

· This section must present a scholarly discussion of biblical integration, Christian counseling, Christian accommodative practices, Chaplain work, pastoral counseling, or other published topics related to the topic and population of interest.

· Bible verses and Christian or faith-based topics can be discussed along with appropriate scholarship (commentaries, theology references, etc.). Note: the audience for this paper is a Professional APA, scholarly reader, not necessarily a Christian audience. Please use scholarship that supports the use of biblical integration with appropriate populations.

· Topics for Future Research

· This section should include information on what research has found as gaps in the literature and what should continue to be the focus for future researchers.

· The learner may extrapolate from research in this section, particularly if there is a rationale of underlying scholarship.

· For instance, if the learner’s topic and population of interest is regarding evidence based treatment for Asian American women who have endured military sexual assault (MSA), but the literature does not offer a scholarly basis for future researchers on this specific topic and population, the learner could extrapolate an argument for this from previous literature on MSA in the female population, in general, making the specific notation regarding how the rationale was derived clear to the audience.

Additional Information

Other Requirements

· The topic and population of interest discussion should be addressed toward a scholarly audience of emerging traumatology experts throughout the paper. Slang, non-professional language, contractions, references to the editorial “we”, pop-psychology jargon, and other references or discussions that are not scholarly should be omitted.

· The body of the Traumatology Paper Assignment should be between 12 and 15 pages (not including title page, abstract, and references).

· Use current Professional APA formatting, organization, voice, and structure throughout.
