“A Worn Path” is a short story from the textbook “Literature for Composition”. I used this story to detail the struggle through a hero’s journey. Some struggles are physical. Other struggles are emotional or mental. I use quotes from the story to document my points in the essay.

This article talks about how A Worn Path addresses racism, and white superiority. I will add this to my point about mental obstacles. I may also use it in the rest of my research paper. I will also use it to back how I feel about how Welty describes Phoenix’s age. This article also discusses Phoenix’s spirit which may be referenced.

This article dives deeper in the short story about Phoenix Jackson. The writer reads between the lines of her struggles and interprets the struggles. I will use this reference to back points about her age and race being an obstacle for her. It is also an overview of the entire story of Phoenix. The writer describes the symbolism in the story as well, which I will use.

Consider the opposition. Have a section— the first body paragraph in your essay. —in which you consider the opposite of your thesis—the opposing view—and explain why, in the end, you disagree with the opposition.

Many parents struggle every year with the cost of uniforms. People believe that schools should use certain colors to identify their students, not blazers or shirts that can only be bought at one place. Parents are often forced to pick schools lower on the standard chart than ones higher because of the cost of uniforms. Parents that took part in a survey said that they suffered financially from purchasing their child’s uniforms. Many officials believe that parents should not have to choose to send their child to a low ranked school because of the cost of uniforms. I plan to use this article by providing evidence of how much the cost of uniforms effects different families.

The Ohio state news followed the research conducted on school uniforms and the results that uniforms had on the students. The research provides exact percentages of how many schools require uniforms and, in those schools, how the students feel. Many students who are forced to wear uniforms lack a sense of belonging. The research showed that from kindergarten to fifth grade between students who had to wear uniforms and did not have to wear uniforms there was no difference in the behavior or much of any difference in attendance. I plan to use this article to provide evidence on how students are mostly negatively affected by uniforms, and do not have any effect on student behavior.

This article uses real students to show how school promote individuality by not only posting banners in the hallways, but also teaching about people like Rosa Parks. The article conveys how when students are made to wear the same thing it lowers their self esteem because it makes different bodies more easily comparable. It also explains how high school is a transition to prepare students for adulthood, but in adulthood you can pick what you want to wear every day. Uniforms are also uncomfortable which can contribute to students being less focused in class. I plan to use this article to show how uniforms have more negative effects than what people often assume. The negative effects of uniforms can follow a person throughout their whole life, like body dysmorphia.

Student attire has many effects on schools. Many positive and negative, but a student’s attire should not affect their learning. The positive effects are often more sought for than the negative effects. While the positive effects of uniforms do implicate more safety and higher attendance rates. The negative effects take away the First Amendment for students and reduces the sense of responsibility in students. If schools are going to require uniforms, there are many ways to make the transition from no uniforms to uniforms much easier. I plan to use the information given in this source by using the bulletin points that the source provides to back up my commentary about how uniforms take away students First Amendment rights.

Citations should be the last name of the author followed by page number: (Jones 48).  If no page number was included in the source, then just the last name is sufficient.

NOTE: You cannot use the author's name in the quote introduction if it is the only element to put in the citation

For example:

Mr. Rogers uses logos in a manner which justifies his request for better funding. Rogers presents one example of his predicament with reasonable tone: “It may sound like quite a difference, but $6,000 pays for less than two minutes of cartoons" (4).

T- Grandma is considered a hypocrite for her being a dishonesty woman.

E- Grandma is a reason as to why the her family was in trouble: “The thought was so embarrassing that she [turn] red in the face and her eyes [dilate] and her feet [jump] up, setting her valise in the corner[…] The grandmother was [curl] under the dashboard, hoping she was injured so that bailey’s wrath would not come down on her all at once. The horrible thought she [have] [have] before the accident was that the house she had [remember] so vividly was not in Georgia but in Tennessee” (O’Connor 521).

A – If Grandma was honest, her family would have been safe. Her lying caused her family to get into a wreck.

L- Grandma wants to be injured so that she would not be blamed for the lie she told.

T- As well as Grandma, Manley Pointer is a hypocrite for lying about who he is.

E- Pointer adds drama to the story by stating “And you needn’t to think you’ll catch me because Pointer [is not] really my name. I use a different name at every house. I call at and [do not] stay anywhere long” (O’Connor 540).

A- Manley pretend to be a good Christian man who sold bible books.

L- He lies about being sick and being an honest man. He is far worse than what he said he is.

T- Manley Pointer uses religion to manipulate Hulga. He constantly asks her to show him her leg and she does.

E- Pointer adds suspense to the story “He leaned the other way and [pull] the valise toward him and [open] it. It had a pale blue spotted lining and there were only two bibles in it. He took one of these out and [open] the cover of it. It was hollow and [contain] a pocket flask of whiskey, a pack of cards, and a small blue box with printing on it. He laid these out in front of her one at a time in an evenly spaced row, like one presenting offerings at the shrine of a goddess. He put the blue box in her hand. THIS PRODUCT TO BE USED ONLY FOR THE PREVENTION OF DISEASE” (O’Connor 539).

A- Hulga believes that Pointer was a good person and she wants to show him every side of who she was.

L – When she discovers that he is not who he said he was, she feels afraid and embarrassed for believing him.

Body #4

T- In addition, Pointer continues to manipulate Hulga.

E- Manley tells Hulga that he has manipulated other customers:” ‘I’ve gotten a lot of interesting things […] One time I got a woman’s glass eye this way […] You [are not] so smart” (O’Connor 540).

A- Pointer’s hypocrisy caused Hulga to lose something that she depends on.

L- Without her leg, Hulga is left in the dark and embarrassed of how she was tricked.

Thesis Restatement

Repeat, using new wording, the most important ideas: the ideas that you really want your reader to remember.

Manley Pointer and Grandma are characters who put up of the act of being something they are not, But Pointer uses religion to use others.

Flannery O’Connor is a Christian writer. O’Connor’s stories are considered Southern Gothic. Her stories were about organized religion and hypocrisy. Good Country People is about a family who believes that the bible salesman, Manley Pointer, is a good Christian man, but soon realize that he is just manipulating them . A Good Man is Hard to Find is about another family who take a trip to Florida, but end in a predicament because of the Grandma.
