Reflections on Growth in GPS 200

Write a 3- to 4-page essay organized as follows.

1. Introduction (1 paragraph)

Provide a brief opening statement about what you will address in the essay by stating the thesis or purpose followed by topics to be addressed. Begin with a hook to draw in your reader.

a) Reflections on Self as a Developing Learner (3 paragraphs total)

Did you notice any changes when you took Gibbons’ SDL Survey again in Module 7? If so, what changed? If you were to complete the “A” vs. “C” student exercise now, would your candid responses be different than they were in Module 3? If so, how? How has or will the “Managing Stress in My Life” discussion help you as a learner? How has or will the “A New View of Failure and Success” discussion help you as a learner? In keeping with the title of this essay, focus on how you have grown or changed. Select two of these topics and discuss one topic per paragraph.

Conclude with one paragraph in which you describe your self-awareness and self-efficacy as a learner at the end course.

b) Reflections on Self as a Developing Researcher (3 paragraphs total)

Research is a process that often involves going down “rabbit holes" and then having to stop, back up and start again. That's the recursive nature of research. It may seem frustrating at times, but in the process we learn a lot about what is germane to our topic and what is not. Persistence will lead to quality sources. Discuss your experience/process researching your paper. Identify areas of strength, areas for growth, and areas of particular challenge. As you prepare to leave GPS 200 and embark on the remainder of your undergraduate journey, what lessons from the staged research paper process do you think will be most valuable? In keeping with the title of this essay, focus on how you have grown or changed. Select two of these topics and discuss one topic per paragraph.

Conclude with one paragraph in which you describe your self-awareness and self-efficacy as a researcher at the end course.

c) Reflections on Self as a Developing Writer (3 paragraphs total)

What feedback did the Smarthinking tutor and professor provide regarding the Draft Research Paper? How did you apply that feedback to the final Research Paper? What feedback did the professor provide regarding your discussions? Has the writing in your discussion Were the writing exercises helpful in your development as a writer? If so how? In keeping with the title of this essay, focus on how you have grown or changed. Select two of these topics and discuss one topic per paragraph.

Conclude with one paragraph in which you describe your self-awareness and self-efficacy as a writer at the end of the course.

d) Conclusion – This should be one or two well-developed paragraphs. What have you learned in GPS 200? What are the high-level enduring principles or concepts or practical applications that you will take with you to your future academic and professional learning settings? If appropriate, you may include your creative expression from the Module 7 Discussion (“What Will Your Verse Be?”). Thinking back to our Alice in Wonderland introduction, where do you want to go from here?

e) References - Provide a list of references using APA style.

Instructions for Gibbons' Self-Directed Learning Survey:

Consider the following aspects of SDL. Rate yourself on a scale from 1, “Not self-directed at all,” to 10, “Very self-directed.”

Remember: this is not a test. There are no right or wrong answers. This is a personal survey for your eyes and your professor's eyes only, and for your use in deciding how to become more self-directed. Make your response useful by being as clear and accurate as you can.

The item on the left describes “1” (not self-directed); the item on the right describes “10” (very self-directed). Choose the number that most accurately rates where you stand on the scale.

Important! Before starting this survey, please keep in mind that you will need to print this page or save as a .pdf file as you will need to refer to your responses later in the semester.
