Written Instructions to Pack Your Suitcase

Many people over pack like me when they go on vacation. Throughout my travels, I have figured out simple ways to pack my suitcase and fit basically everything I want in it and still have room to buy souvenirs. These instructions will take you step-by-step through the packing and unpacking process to ensure all goes well.

To briefly introduce you to the process, you will be organizing your clothes, rolling each garment, packing each rolled garment, and after you arrive you will shake each garment to remove any slight wrinkles. The most important step in this process is the packing because a smoothly packed suitcase will fit all that is needed for your trip.

Materials

The materials you will need are as follows:

· Clothes

· Suitcase

· These instructions

*** Toiletries will be added separately ***

Estimated Time and Cost

This process will not take very long once you have everything you need organized. If I had to estimate how long this will take, I would give a range of about two to three hours if you know what you want to bring. There is no cost if you already have a suitcase and carry-on bag. If not, you can purchase these items at your local department store or online or about $20 to $500.

Instructions

1. ORGANIZE your clothes

a. Decide what all though want to pack.

b. Separate clothes into similar stacks

· Pants

· Sweaters

· Shirts

· Hanging

· Bulky

· Socks

· Undergarments

· Outerwear

· Footwear

· Toiletries

* TIP * This step is important for packing. The pants can go on the bottom of the suitcase for support and the undergarments will easily slide into awkward places.

2. ROLL your clothes to fit in your suitcase

a. Begin with a folded article of clothing

b. Roll the garment on the left or right side and continue until you reach the opposite end.

c. Repeat this for each garment you wish to include in you packing.

***HINT*** Do NOT roll hanging and bulky items and outerwear if you don’t want to. They will later be placed on top of clothes in the suitcase.

3. PACK your rolled clothes.

a. Place each rolled garment into the suitcase

***HINT*** Place rolled garment perpendicular to straps in your suitcase. This will allow them to tightly fit in the case and not move during travel.

b. Repeat the packing for each rolled garment

c. Place folded hanging and bulky garments on top of rolled garments

* TIP * Place socks in corners and ends on the suitcase. They can easily fit in the narrow cracks between the rolled garments

4. Close the suitcase

a. Find the straps on the side of the suitcase and connect them over the clothes

b. Close the suitcase and zipper it shut.

***HINT*** Leave hangers at home! They take up space and most hotels will have hangers for you to use.

5. Shake garment when unpacking

a. Take garments out of the suitcase one-by-one and shake out any wrinkles that may have formed due to travel.

*** HINT *** Don’t shake too hard. Your garments can still stay folded if you are careful. This will save you time when unpacking and placing garments in drawers.

Extra TIPS:

· Buy an expandable suitcase, it will allow you to pack unexpanded and purchase souvenirs and expand it on the way back home.

· Wear one pair of shoes and pack the rest in the compartments in the front of your suitcase. If you have too many shoes, you might try packing them IN the suitcase or you might need a separate bag.

· Put all toiletries in a separate carry-on bag. This will keep them organized and in case the airline loses your luggage, you will at least be able to take a shower and get clean with your own products.
