Welcome to our Week Three Writing Task! This week, we began our discussion of how we work to share our identity with the world through physical objects. We read chapters from Marjane Satrapi's graphic novel, Persepolis, and Alison Bechdel's graphic novel, Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic. In both of these chapters, we are given a chance to consider how physical objects (e.g. clothing, furniture) may help convey our identity to the people around us.
Brainstorming For our second Writing Task, we will begin to explore how we work to share our identities. Before you begin writing, I would like you to reflect on the following questions. Feel free to jot down ideas as they come to you – this is a good way to brainstorm!
How do you see yourself? How do the hobbies and interests that you have inform this self-image? What hobbies or interests are most closely tied to your identity? How do you use these to construct a public identity? What makes you different from other people? In other words, what qualities, interests, or behaviors make you unique? What objects help you convey your identity to others? Do you feel you project an identity that aligns with social norms and expectations, or do you express yourself in a way that intentionally pushes against or disrupts norms and expectations? Why?
Writing Now that you have reflected on these questions, I would like you to:

Writing Task Rubric
Choose one object that you feel projects your identity to the world. Write a short essay that describes this object and explains how it relates to your identity and, furthermore, how it helps other people understand who you are. Think critically about this object -- please do not write about your phone! Choose an object that is deeply personal and unique to your identity.
Use the brainstorming questions above to guide your writing. You do not need to use quotes from our readings this week.
Guidelines and Submission Details Please write a personal essay that is 500 words (about 2 pages) long. This is the minimum and the maximum! Challenge yourself to meet this word count. If you go over, revise your work so that you meet the word limit. If you are under the word count, read over your paper and see if there are places where you might add an anecdote or offer the reader greater detail. Do not count the MLA formatting details (header, heading, and title) in your word count. The total word count should reflect the original content you have written for this Writing Task. Use MLA Format for this paper. Your final paper should meet the basic requirements for MLA Style documentation. You can review these requirements in our MLA Format and Style presentation! Do your best to offer clear, specific details. Remember that your goal is to present the reader with a thorough and detailed essay that helps them understand your point of view. Be sure that you are responding to the prompt. After writing, review your work and look over the brainstorming questions above. Is there anything missing? Have you veered away from the intention of the paper? If so, take some time to revise your work so that your writing clearly responds to the prompt. Save your file as a .doc, .docx, or.pdf. These are the permitted file types for uploads. If you use Google Docs or Pages, you may have to export your file in one of these formats. Use your full name and Writing Task 1 as the filename. Here is an example: KristinKaz_WritingTask1.doc.
Deadlines for Submission
Writing Task 2 should be completed and submitted by 8pm on Tuesday, July 7th.

Responds to the Prompt
The student's Writing Task meets content requirements as outlined in the writing prompt.
5.0 得分 Great engagement with the prompt! Nice work on this Writing Task! Your work clearly responds to the prompt and addresses all the major points outlined in the writing assignment. Keep it up!!
3.5 得分 Almost there! Your work is solid but it looks like you may have veered away from the prompt a bit, either by forgetting an important part of this writing task or by getting wrapped up in another part of the assignment. It's all good! In the future, just keep the prompt open while you write and do a quick review of your work before you submit it. You got this!
2.5 得分 Doesn't really respond to the prompt. Hmm...it looks like your work sort of veered away from the goal of our writing prompt. In the future, read the writing prompt closely and make note of the main points you will need to address. Keep a list of those main points near you while you write, then use it to see if your final document has addressed each of the points appropriately. You got this!!
Format and Style
The student's Writing Task follows MLA formatting and style specifications as outlined in the prompt and detailed in our MLA format presentation.
5.0 得分 Perfect MLA! Excellent work with MLA on this assignment! You have met all the criteria required for an appropriately formatted academic paper, from including a header on every page to accurately citing quotes and source material. Wonderful!!
3.5 得分 Looks pretty good...but it could be GREAT! Your writing is looking good, but the paper itself is missing some important formatting requirements. Why not review our presentation on MLA to make sure you have got all the formatting requirements nailed before our next formal assignment? You can do it!
2.5 得分 Hey, Where's the Format? It looks like there may have been some confusion about formatting. Remember, writing at the college level requires a teensy bit of formality, and one of the ways we can achieve that is by using proper formatting. Make sure to use MLA in your next big writing assignment!

Depth of Thought
The student's Writing Task is thoughtful and critically engaged, going beyond superficial engagement with the prompt.
5.0 得分 That's DEEP! Great critical engagement with this writing task! Your writing is thoughtful and responds to the writing prompt in a way that demonstrates active critical thinking. Love it!!
3.5 得分 Keep Digging! Your engagement with the prompt is clear, but it looks like you could push yourself a bit in terms of critical thought. Some of your ideas feel a little bit superficial. For our next assignment, push yourself a little bit and try to make deeper connections. Think about comparisons you can draw between the writing assignment and your own experiences and observations -- that might help you make some connections within your writing that will enhance your critical thinking.
2.5 得分 A Little Bit Shallow Your paper is coming along, but it only seems to scratch the surface of the ideas we are looking into. Think about the ways Gloria Anzaldúa and Firoozeh Dumas offer deep and thoughtful considerations of how language influences their relationships. They dig into their perspectives and ideas in an effort to make emotional connections with their readers. Try to emulate that depth in your writing next week! You can do it!

Clarity, Specificity, and Detail
The student's Writing Task is clear and incorporates specific examples and important details in order. There are no major issues in terms of grammar, such as vague pronouns, that would otherwise cloud the meaning and intention of the student's writing.
5.0 得分 Excellent! Your writing incorporates beautifully specific examples and important details that work together to make your work clear. You also paid attention to the reader's experience by making sure there were no vague pronouns or other issues that might fog the clarity for the reader. Great work!!
3.5 得分 Pretty good! Your writing is solid, but sometimes there are some issues in terms of clarity that make the reader's experience harder than it needs to be. This might be due to vague pronouns, funky punctuation, or some other grammatical issues. It could also be because of a lack of specific examples or key details that would help the reader see the point in your writing. Next time, do your best to get your thoughts out of your head and onto the page -- make those connections for your reader!
2.5 得分 You're Almost There! Even though you have good ideas at work in your paper, it is hard to make a connection as a reader. Offering detailed examples and anecdotes can help build a connection between you and your reader, and can ensure that your ideas come through as clearly as possible. In your next writing assignment, do your best to incorporate as many detailed descriptions and examples as you can, and maybe revisit our Grammar Workshops to brush up on that aspect of academic writing.
