Illuminating Lessons through Art

In many schools today, art is not the focus of the learning curriculum. Art has been pushed aside by those in charge of the education process who put more emphasis on math and language skills. Yet a creative teacher can still incorporate art into each lesson while still reaching the objectives expected. Art can enhance the learning process by helping the student relate to the subject.

Using art in subjects that some students have more difficulty with, or do not relate well to, such as Math, can create a better connection with the subject. By using picture graphs and other such forms of art in math, students may develop a better understanding of the lesson. For instance, if the lesson were on measurement and a student did not quite comprehend the concept of using a ruler; they may get a better understanding if it is taught in an art lesson. The art lesson could include using the ruler to connect points through directions, creating an object such as a star. This involves hands on learning, and makes the lesson more enjoyable to see the result of a math lesson turn into an art project.

Art also promotes cultural learning, and can be highly effective as a visual tool during a history lesson. Students that are learning about geography may find art helpful by using maps to illustrate the lesson. The teacher may have the student draw a map of the state, or area that they are studying. Adding the topographical areas to the map may help the student better visualize the area, and in turn be better equipped to test on the subject. Art can also be used in history to visualize how certain cultures lived, by recreating replicas of ancient art. This would bring the ancient culture alive and the students would be better able to identify with the people described in the lesson.

Art in reading can provide a beneficial service, especially in the younger years when students are still learning to read. By using art in conjunction with the story being read the student may be able to better identify with the characters, and summary of the story. By using a flannel board, the students could then recreate the story themselves, or the teacher could have the students draw what they think may happen next. Students can identify better with the characters by acting out the story using masks that they created.

Language Arts could be enhanced by art as well. Children often have a hard time with learning nouns and verbs. Yet if these were added to pictures and art, the students would be able to relate better. Even in learning the alphabet, art has been known to be beneficial. Students are able to identify a certain picture with the letter. This helps with their recognition and cognizance.

Teachers could use art in phonics as well, by associating the sounds with picture clues. The teacher could call out a sound and have the student pick, or draw, the correct picture clue.

Science may be the easiest artistic subject because art and nature go hand in hand. The teacher could use a variety of artistic projects during almost any science lesson. A student creating a mobile with a cloud and rain drops, could enhance the weather. The study of the solar system is one of the top artistic projects in most schools, with the students replicating the solar system through models.

No matter the subject, art can and should be used during the lesson. It benefits the student through so many ways, providing hand eye coordination, improving thinking skills, and promotes comprehension and enjoyment of the subject.
