Writing Project 4—Annotated Cover Letter

Length: No more than 1 page, and includes Google Docs comments connecting your WP2 analysis and/or WP3 resume to your resume choices

Format: Cover letter

Scenario

You’ve located a posting for a job or internship that you think you’d be a great fit for. You’ve analyzed the posting and are ready to compose your cover letter.

Task

Create a new cover letter paired with your WP3 resume and tailored to the analysis you performed in WP2. Use comments to annotate where your analysis impacts your rhetorical choices. Note that effective cover letters will

· Use formatting that is both conventional and approachable

· Include details that support your argument for how you’re the best fit for the job (show, don’t tell)

· Use a professional yet human tone

· Feature 7+ comments (10 total with your 3 PAT comments) connecting your cover letter to your WP2 analysis. Annotations are vital to this assignment; resumes without them won’t receive credit.

· Display a near-perfect level of sentence-level correctness

Considerations

1. See chapter 5 regarding letters of application in SWW.

2. Remember PAT! Neglecting PAT costs you 10 points.

3. Are there places where you should depart from SWW’s advice? How do you know?

4. Even if you already have an existing cover letter, in what ways does this posting necessitate that you revise?

5. Your cover letter should be as detailed as possible given that you will conceivably send it out. Include a salutation to a specific party in your cover letter. Remember PAT!
