a. This is where you will start to create your project. Create a powerpoint

presentation which includes a historical overview of the periodization of your cities. As a

general rule, each slide should contain information in full sentences and an image.

b. Start by naming your cities, the country in which they are located, and the

approximate current population--both for the city proper and the metropolitan

population (be sure to cite to all of your source information, including images) (2 slides

minimum)

c. Give a historical overview of the major periods of your two cities (6 additional slides

minimum). This is NOT a comprehensive history, but rather to focus on how the urban

systems developed for these two cities. For example, you may break it down into 3-4

time periods and give a description of the importance of urbanization and deve lopment

during these periods. You will all approach your projects differently.

d. Some ideas for consideration:

• Were your cities--colonial cities, imperial cities, planned cities, built to be a capital

city, etc?

• When did major developments in the urban systems take place? Perhaps,

depending on the city, this may include roads, an underground public transport

system, trams/trolleys, water and sewer systems, railroads, etc.

• Were there any major historical events or processes that affected your cities and

are commemorated (such as with a ceremony or monuments) or culture

today? Examples could include a major political event such as a revolution or

natural disasters such as a flood or earthquake. A process might include a pattern

of immigration (for example, post colonial migration to imperial center).

• Is your city tied to a particular commodity production (such as automobiles) or

services (such as banking and finance) or known as a “type” of city (such as a

“celebrity” city--film entertainment, or theatre, or fashion) or perhaps a "green"

city, etc?.

• There are many possibilities here. Again, you will all approach your overview

differently and the quality and innovation of your projects will enable collective

learning.

e. Finally, what are 2 ways in which your cities are similar? What are two ways in

which they differ? (2 additional slides minimum)

f. Save and post as a pdf (rather than google docs). Your presentation should be 10

slides minimum.

g. Make sure to provide citations for all of your sources, including images.
