I (State your name), would like to start off by saying that I have worked at MCI for 4 years when it first opened. During that time, I have seen it grow and become what it is today. I am exceptionally proud of what it has become even through these difficult time during COVID. I have had many roles in these short but promising 4 years. I have worked as charge nurse for 1 year straight because we had no other nurses to help fill that role. I have been a secondary screener and given Vaccination for Covid on the weekends. I have learned every procedure and educated many nurses in those procedures in the Radiation oncology department. Now I am the only Nurse in the department that knows mainly all procedures, works with a physician, Schedule, organize and set up the difficult task of 2 radioisotopes called I-131 and Xofigos with Dr. A. and when I am not doing that you can find me on the floor seeing patients. I value my job and I am passionate on what I do. I would like to take the time and explain every action that I attempted to do, that led up to management decision to go forward with the corrective action.

Recently, with everything going on at MCI and my department I notice I had my ACLS and PALS coming up for renewal. Like every 2 years I have always scheduled these classes a month in advanced without no issues getting into a class. On this occasion when I went to register everything had changed, due to all Covid restrictions. I first went online and attempted to register for ACLS and PALS around the end of April (June 1st was my ACLS expiration), but to my surprise the only classes available showed June 1st for ACLS and June 4th for PALS. I remember calling the American heart association to see if there were any earlier classes that I could take, but Lindy told me due to COVID 19 the classes have been reduced in size making it difficult to get any earlier classes. Upon seeing this I “Did” notified my supervisor Yailen immediately about all the changes the American heart association has made to register due to COVID. I notified Yailen around late April that I might need to have June 1st and June 4th off if no earlier date where available. What was apparent that when I advised her about those dates, she was busy and looking at her phone doing something else, so possibly not paying to much attention to the matter since she did not write down the dates requested. Since I was unable to registered for earlier classes I decided to finally register for the 06/01/2021 class on 05/03/2021 in fear it would fill. I waited till the following week to register for the PALS, since I wanted to get a better date since 06/04/2021would already be expired. I communicated all this with Yailen and my educators and they seemed to agree that during Covid times it should be permissible. On 06/31/2021 Memorial day, I followed all the mandates and videos and completed the 4-hour pre-course. When I arrived on 06/01/2021 at 730am for my ACLS class to take my mega code and test, I was told that I did the wrong ACLS form and would not be able to test. I want to note that while I was in line there was 3 other nurses that were sent home for also doing the wrong Course. I called and notified Christina Gill my manager to notify her of what had happened. I explained to her of all the difficulties and changes made during COVID and attempted to resolve the issue by paying for a Private ACLS and PALS from the American Heart Association, done by a licensed trainer. That way I would have both licenses on 06/01/2021. I was told that this could not be done, and it had to be through B.H. I called and the spoke to Liddy from the American heart Association, she told me it was an honest mistake and that I went to the class on time. She told me that due to the many changes made during Covid many nurses have been sent home preventing them from taking the class. She was nice enough to make the necessary changes and get me on the next one-day class for ACLS and change my PALS class for the AM, so I could return to work in the afternoon if my department needed Me. On the day of my 2 classes I only had 7 in my class and saw 3 nurses sent home and during my PALS they sent home a nurse that drove from Boca Raton for not doing the right pre-requisites. Once I complete all my classes, I called Christina to return to work, but she instructed me that I did not need to come in. While I was on the phone, I recommended to Christina that navigating all the new changes that the American Heart Association has made have drastically changed during Covid and that all nurses should have been notified of the many changes by our educators at a much earlier time. Since that conversation the educators finally sent an email on every step to properly register for class (something I didn’t have). The email was sent on 06/08/2021 and it properly states the step-by-step process on all the new changes since COVID 19(20 PowerPoint slides).

I want to address that before B.H. my educators at my other facilities always registered our classes and always kept communication with our leaders for when we needed to be out of the building, so we can always be current. I have no issue scheduling my classes like I did the first time in 2017 and second time 2019 and all these classes were done a month in advanced. It would have been wonderful that our educator could have warned us about the changes and all the difficulties on registering for classes during Covid and not 4 days after this situation transpired. The last thing I ever wanted to do is take PTO during my transition to a new department. I want to finish that with all the difficulties we have all experienced and the stress level all of us nurses have gone through during these Covid times, I felt I made every attempt to make sure I would not let my ACLS and PALS license expire. The only thing I ask to take under consideration is, if the Florida Board of Nursing is giving us 2 more-month exception to renew our nursing license during these times, I ask that you understand everything is a bit more difficult and we are all learning how to adapt day by day. Please known that when I am wrong, I admit it and take full responsibility. On this occasion I feel with all my heart, that this corrective action is not warranted.
