PERT ANALYSIS

The above diagrams are the updated Gantt chart and the PERT diagram respectively. They visualize the project compression techniques of fast tracking and crashing activities in the Community Garden Project. Specifically, the budget making process and the preparation of disbursements and reconciliations have been fast tracked. The playground creation duration on the other hand has been crashed from 30 days to 25 days.

In order to fast track the budget making process and the preparation of disbursements process, then the disbursements need to start being prepared when the budget making process reaches 66% completion. This is to imply that these activities will then end at the same time and immediately kick-off the playground creation activities. Development of the disbursement process for the project, including acceptance and approval forms will begin when the preparation and documentation of the project budget according to the plan and available resources is two-thirds complete. This means that at the end of these activities, a garden land approval would have been acquired with purchase orders and product acceptance forms delivered. This would be achieved by allocating more resources including plan makers and workers towards these activities. However, the associated risks with this kind of fast-tracking is that changes in the plan and in the deliverables, may necessitate a re-work incase they do not match the planned budget.

The creation of the playground duration will be reduced from 30 days to 25 days by allocating more engineers, workers, materials and equipment into the work item. However, hastening the playground creation activities may compromise the quality of the playground and thus may not meet playground quality assurance standards. While both fast-tracking and crashing are intended to allow an early finish for the community garden project, especially with regards to monetary incentives by saving costs, avoiding late penalties and freeing up resources for another project, the crashing costs and the fast-tracking costs need to be compared with the overall costs of the project to evaluate the potential benefits and risks involved.
