Potentially Hazardous Situation and Safety Threats
As children reach preschool age, there are many potentially hazardous situation and safety threats. Hazardous situation/safety threats has become a big problem for preschool children (3 and 4 year old). The potentially hazardous situation safety threats that are common in preschool age children are injury's from slipping, falls, bike injuries, biting and hitting and striking.
Injuries from slipping happen when a child fall because of a spill that was not cleaned properly and when the walk way is not clear from obstructions. We must teach children to keep the walkway clear in order to keep to make sure everyone stay safe. Simple procedure to inform everyone about spills should be put into place. At preschool age, they are able to talk and tell their teacher about messes they have made or messes other child may have made. A different safety monitor can be assigned to help keep the area clean and free from obstructions. Parents should clean up spill immediately. They should teach their children to always informed them of a spill so it can be cleaned properly. They use a bathmat with a nonskid bottom in the bath tub.
Falling is common in preschool age children but is unpreventable. These children tends to climb playground equipment, climbing domes and monkey bars. During this time the child coordination skills and motor skill are still developing. They began to test their limits and their abilities which sometimes become fail. We need to encourage their exploration, but not at the risk of their safety. Children need to know the purpose of playground equipment and then they will appreciate the value of play when they are informed about safety rules and the importance of play. To prevent children from falling at home, parents need to wipe up spills immediately, make sure they have a clear are for playing by removing toys, rugs, and electrical cords, remove tables from the play area and keep the children under very close supervision.
Bike injuries should be taught to children even before they begin to ride a bike, They should know the importance of knee pads, helmets, training wheels, elbow pads, and know how to wear them properly. Helmets are the single most effective way to prevent a head injury when riding a bike. It should be a requirement that children wear these items at all times when riding their bikes. These protective items will help protect children in the case of a fall. They should have a designated area that only is for bike riding because this will eliminate children chances of getting run over by bike riders. Parents should teach the child to always look forward when riding a bike, teach them to ride on the right side of the road, with traffic, and use appropriate hand signal. Parents should actively supervise the child at all times while riding their bikes.
Biting is something that occurs during preschool age. Biting happen for many reasons. Children may bite because they are in pain, they maybe looking for attention, exploring their world, frustrated, or just looking for a reaction. There are very few precautions that can be made to keep children from biting. Exercises that develop their social and problem solving skills is one precaution that can be used. By children knowing that biting is prohibited, they know better ways to handle wanting to bite another child. Parents should inform their children that biting is wrong and there are consequences behind it. They should explain to their children that biting hurts other people. Parents should give the child enough attention during the day so they won't get the desire to bite. Parents should never teach a child to bite another child back.
Hitting/Striking causes injuries just as well as biting. As children goes through preschool years, they began to develop socially, cognitively, and emotionally. Some children tends to bite other children out of frustration, while others hit, strike, or throw at other children out of frustration. To prevent biting, it should be explained to children that hitting and striking will not be acceptable. There should protocol set into motion for what to do when a child want to hit another person, which will be very helpful. Taking side should never happen when hitting and striking is the situation. The goal of the teacher should be to promote safer behavior and options that will help children be in control and make the right decision. Parents should avoid letting their children watch violent TV shows because they sometimes copy what they see. Parents should teach their child how to teach other children. Parents should avoid playing hitting and wrestling around the house. Sometimes children will demonstrate this action during playtime at school.
In conclusion , any attempt to keep preschool children safe, safety precaution should be properly followed. At these ages, it is easy for injuries to occur and we must be prepared. When it comes to the potentially hazardous situation/safety threats are all based on proper supervision with inadequate supervision. These safety hazards are hard to prevent and even harder to uphold. Potentially hazardous situation/safety are constant and ongoing and always need to be reevaluated constantly. Changes need to be made to help ensure the safety of all children.
