Windshield Survey Paper
A windshield survey is a great way to identify the strengths and weaknesses of a community. It is commonly referred to as the “head-to-toe assessment” of a community. A community health nurse can use this information identify problems and develop programs to resolve those identified problems. This assignment is going to show you how powerful observation can be. This is a group assignment. The Stanhope book; pages 213- 215, should be used as a reference throughout this assignment.
This will be submitted as an APA paper with a minimum of 1100 words. Please remember basic writing rules and review the rubric to ensure you are satisfying the requirements of the paper. Please do not wait until the last minute to start this assignment.
Instructions
It is recommended that someone drive you around the community/ area that is assigned to the group to observe the community. While driving through the community/ area observe the following:
· Boundaries
· Housing/zoning
· Open Spaces
· Modes of transportation
· Retail/ Shopping
· Social Service Centers
· Health Services
· People
· Man-made environment
· Social/Political Systems
Once you have completed the observation aspect, you will report your findings in APA paper format; including the following topics:
· Introduce the concept of community health nursing, community as a client and define the meaning of a windshield survey. What benefit does the windshield survey provide for the field of nursing? For the community?
· Discuss at least 4 examples related to each section below:
a. Boundaries
b. Housing/zoning
c. Open Spaces
d. Modes of transportation
e. Retail/ Shopping
f. Social Service Centers
g. Health Services
h. People
i. Man-made environment
j. Social/Political Systems
k. Interview an elected official from the community, a community
member/resident, and a school personnel
· Based on the observations from the windshield survey, what are 4 needs that you identified as a community health need? Write these as nursing diagnosis (Include R/T and AEB). **Be sure to prioritize! **
· What goals or outcomes would you suggest for these 4 community health needs? Use SMART goal format.
· Based on your observations from the windshield survey, what are the community strengths? Could any of these resources be used to help correct the weak areas?
· Include a group-reflection regarding the observations you identified.
