White Paper Format and Citation for the Rhetorical Analysis of Writing in a field of study
White paper format: During class we analyzed the white paper genre to determine what kinds of features a white paper has. You could use our analysis as a guide to format your white paper, or you can look at the same samples we examined and format your paper in one of those styles.
Because the audience for this paper is a novice writer in the field (someone who knows nothing about writing for that discipline), you need to make this information accessible for them. The white paper style usually translates technical information for a non- expert audience. It makes use of specific examples and information so that the audience can understand.
Citing your sources: Each white paper should contain citations for the primary and secondary sources you have looked at to form your paper.
Please format the references/works cited/bibliography in the style that would be typical for your field of study (APA, MLA, Chicago, Harvard, bluebook (a law style similar to Chicago), IEEE, CSE, ASA, etc.) You do not have to double space unless that is how you are presenting your white paper. Single spacing for the references page is fine if that matches your paper format.
Examples within your paper should also have a citation that references the text the example comes from. Please use the same style as above. For example:

How many sources?: Students should have at a minimum, one secondary source and 3- 5 primary sources. But, all sources you have used should appear on your list. For example, if you use Carroll’s article to define terms, then please add her to your list as well.

Resources for citation: Endnote: Powernotes will download a file called .ris which can be uploaded to End note which can be installed on Microsoft word. If you are already familiar with end note, feel free to use this method. Library guide for using endnote: http://csus.libguides.com/EndNote
Library database: If all of your sources are from the library database, you could use the library database citations (make sure they are formatted in the style you need). Then copy and paste to your document.

Bibliography Generators: If you have a mix of sources, mainly from internet documents, you could use Citation machine, Easybib or another online generator to help you format citations.
