WHAT IS COLLABORATION? WEEK 2 DQ 1

Building Relationships and Trust

Strengthening Collaboration Between Schools and Families

Explain how the ideas of the critically reflective practitioner, collaborative teaming, and communication strategies align with the two methods you are discussing.

Critically reflective practitioner, collaborative teaming, and communication strategies align with the two methods by bridging the gap between what children learn and how they learn. We have to look at the whole child and their environment to help establish their academic needs. By teaming up with families it allows each of us to play a vital role in communicating the wants and needs for a child who may be doing well or a child who is struggling. By having open dialog with families, it helps to build a level of trust between myself as the educator, the child and the family.

Describe how you will work with your colleagues to bring these strategies to life.

In order to bring these strategies to life it will be necessary to work with my colleagues. By do so I will have a group to bounce ideas off of and relates what is working and what isn’t. By communicating the positive and the negative we will be able to attach those things that are most beneficial to my students. With this information I will be able to plan individual plans for each student making it easier to implement. This team approach helps me to feel supported as well as my families.

Summarize how you will use these ideas in your future work in inclusive environments.

A child’s social, emotional, cognitive, and academic development is strengthened when educators and families work together. When a child sees a positive relationship developing between educators and family, the child recognizes that the important people in his or her life are working together and trust each other, and he or she will do the same. In the future it will be important to develop relationships with parents and student that foster a strong foundation of communication. During meetings with parents and students it will be necessary after listening, to ask follow-up questions that are open-ended and non-threating along with asking if taking notes is okay (Engaging All Learners, 2016). Along with the above strategies, here are some additional engage ideas. Engage parents at drop off and pick up times, keep a journal and allow children have access during their day and at pick up encourage parents read and contribute. Set up a Parent Information Board, write regular newsletters or blog posts, and send emails or text messages.
