Midterm Question #1

Instructions

So far this semester, we have discussed the rise and fall of quite a few empires. With these in mind, I would like you to create your own "Frankenstein" empire. In other words, create the ideal empire by adopting the best characteristics from the empires we've learned about. To do this:

1. Choose  ONE specific characteristic or approach from  EACH of the following empires that you would adopt for your own empire:

· The Neo-Assyrians

· The Persians

· The Greek City-States or the Hellenistic Civilization

· The Romans (either the Republic or the principate).

· These characteristics and approaches can concern how these civilizations conquered people, how they organized their government, their communication system, their religious practices, their architecture and art, their laws, etc.

· You will need a total of 4 characteristics or approaches, one from each of the empires listed above

2. Fully describe each of the 4 characteristics and/or approaches.

3. Fully explain why you would personally use each of these 4 characteristics/approaches in your own empire. In your opinion, what makes them effective?

· Make sure you fully explain this part. One sentence is rarely enough of an explanation to earn full credit.

How to earn a good grade (and avoid earning a bad one)

Make sure to address each part of the question fully. Write your answers in sentence form using good grammar and complete sentences. You may only use information from the assigned textbook pages, videos, or instructor lectures to answer this question. Using outside information (websites, other textbooks, other people, etc.) will result in a zero for the assignment. Please keep in mind that all answers go through a plagiarism checker. If you copy from another student, your assignment will receive a zero. Please contact me if you need any clarification about these directions.

FEEDBACK –

Unfortunately, I can't offer this submission any credit. First, you are only permitted to use information from my lectures and other assigned materials from the semester so far to answer these questions. Second, you must use better grammar and spelling when you submit your answers. You have to use complete sentences. You can use bullet points, but you need to write full sentences next to them. This is important because in this answer I'm having a hard time understanding what you mean. For example, "Alexander the real Phillip second"- who is that?? And you mentioned principles in your last paragraph, but are you talking about the Romans? We haven't gotten to Justinian in this course.

Midterm Question #2

Instructions

I have discussed a variety of leaders in connection with the different ages, civilizations, and religions we've covered so far. I would like you to identify and discuss  2 specific individuals whose traits you think made them good and effective leaders. To do this:

1. Identify 2 individuals who you believe were good and effective leaders. You may define "good and effective" in whatever way you like. In your answer tell me:

·

· Their names

· Around when they lived (specific dates, centuries, or the names of the ages are fine as long as they're correct)

· And briefly, who they were.

2. Fully explain why each of these individuals were good and effective leaders.

·

1. You must include at least 2 examples for each leader that demonstrates their good and effective leadership.

1. 4 examples total: Two examples for Leader 1 and two examples for Leader 2.

1. Make sure to fully explain why the examples you cited demonstrate good and effective leadership.

**Hint: I would suggest dedicating a large paragraph to each leader you chose (2 paragraphs total) for this assignment.

How to earn a good grade (and avoid earning a bad one): Make sure to address each part of the question fully. Write your answers in sentence form using good grammar and complete sentences. You may only use information from the textbook or my lectures to answer this question. Using outside information (websites, other textbooks, other people, etc.) will result in a zero for the assignment. Please keep in mind that all answers go through a plagiarism checker. If you copy from another student, your assignment will receive a zero. Please contact me if you need any clarification about these directions.

FEEDBACK –

This is a good start, but you needed to give more information about who Alexander was, like the giant empire he built. In addition, you needed to explain more specifically how he motivated his soldiers, why he needed to recruit soldiers, why he was willing to fight alongside his troops, and more specifically how he dealt mercilessly with those who resisted him. There were specific examples offered in the lecture and assigned textbook pages. In addition, this assigned directed you to discuss 2 individuals from the history we've discussed so far.

Instructions and Hints for Midterm Questions

Instructions

· The midterm exam consists of 2 essay questions. The first question is worth  50 points. The second question is worth  40 points.

· Answers to both of these questions are due by  11:59pm on Tuesday, March 5. However, students are encouraged to submit their answers sooner rather than later. This allows the instructor time to point out any major errors she sees and allows students time to address them.

· Answers should be submitted through the assignments in this module (similar to what how you've completed assignments up to this point in the semester) either as a word document or a pdf.

·

· Students may also handwrite their answers and submit pictures of the written answer. If you choose this option, make sure the picture is very clear and your handwriting is neat. I need to be able to actually read your answer in order to grade it.

· We do not use ProctorU or any other supervisory software.  This exam is considered "open book" in that the instructor assumes that students will use their notes and other course material to complete the midterm questions.

· However, students are only permitted to  use the information they learned in this course so far to answer the questions This includes the instructor lectures (recorded or transcript) and/or the assigned videos, textbook pages, and documents.

·

· If students use information from elsewhere (outside websites, textbooks, other people, etc.) their answers will earn a grade of zero.

· Answers must be the student's own work. All submitted assignments go through a plagiarism checker. If you copy from another student, your assignment will receive a zero.

Hints

· These questions ask you to think back about what you've learned so far this semester. The point of these questions for students is to demonstrate to the instructor (me) that you've thought about and understood the course material and historical narrative presented. So, don't assume that I know what you're talking about. Spell it out for me and explain everything fully.

· To further demonstrate your comprehension of the course so far, a good answer will address each part of the questions fully and will use specific information and examples from the instructor's lectures and assigned readings and videos.

· Finally, good answers will use good grammar and spelling.  Answers should be written in sentence form. Bullet points are fine, but major sure you use complete sentences next to them.

· Contact the instructor if you have any questions or problems. However, please keep in mind my office hours. If you contact me after my office hours on the day the assignments are due, you may not hear back from me until the next day after the assignments are closed.

Assignment: We the People- Oligarchy vs. Democracy

Instructions

1.  Review the  Lecture 3B transcript  Download Lecture 3B transcript

concerning the Spartan and Athenian governments. Look specifically at pages 1-3.

2. After reviewing the lecture, answer the questions listed below.

Questions

1. As stated in the title of this assignment, the Spartans had an oligarchy as their form of government, while the Athenians had a democracy. In your own words, define the Spartan oligarchy and Athenian democracy.

·

·

· Your answer needs 2 definitions: one for the Spartan oligarchy and one for Athenian democracy.

· Don't copy my definitions from the lecture/transcript. I'm asking you to write them in your own words (paraphrase). Get in touch with me if you're not sure how to do this (just make sure you do so by the end of my office hours on the due date).

3. Answer this question: In your opinion, which city-state (Sparta or Athens) do you think had the most effective approach to governing its citizens?

·

·

· You must choose one of the two governments. "Neither" or "both" are not options.

· You might consider how you would define “most effective." It does not have to mean the most pleasant for citizens.

4. Explain why you believe Sparta or Athens had the most effective approach to government. In your explanation, you must include at least 2 specific examples/pieces of information from the lecture to support your choice and demonstrate your reasons.

·

· Keep in mind that I am asking you specifically about the governments these two city-states had. Don't tell me about how babies were checked in Sparta or about the art and culture of Athens unless you're able to connect that to the Spartan oligarchy or the Athenian democracy

How to earn a good grade (and avoid earning a bad one)

Make sure to address all questions fully. You may need to write a few sentences for each question. Write your answer in sentence form using good grammar and complete sentences. You may only use information from my lecture (no assigned reading this week). Using outside information (websites, other textbooks, other people, etc.) will result in a zero for the assignment. Please keep in mind that all answers go through a plagiarism checker. If you copy from another student, your assignment will receive a zero. Please contact me if you need any clarification about these directions.
