Discussion |
An encounter that was of particular interest involved a patient who is suicidal and suffers from major depressive disorder. What caught my attention during this encounter is how life and personal experience significantly affect a patient's mental health (Bains, N., & Abdijadid, S. 2020). Through a detailed history and daily engagement with the patient, I discovered that suicidal attempts and depression resulted from gender-based violence in the form of rape from the father and the other family members dismissing her claims and not supporting her. The depression was worsened by the fact that her mother did not believe her and did not support her decision to report the father to the authorities. Patient suffering was connected to this childhood trauma. This understanding helped me to always handle mental health patients in a holistic approach, in that to have effective treatment that is beneficial to the patient, one has to go beyond the symptoms and identify the underlying contributing factors to the patient's condition. I learned the need to develop a therapeutic relationship with the patient to build trust (Henry, T. L et al., 2020). The relationship and trust enable the patient to open up about their feelings, which will help in the quick diagnosis and development of a treatment plan.

My goal for the next week is to enhance my skills in conducting a mental health assessment, improve my ability to take a comprehensive history and understand the context of a patient’s health challenges (Wykes, T et al., 2023). Proposed schedule
