The objective that I chose was the IVP-15 Increase use of safety belts. I chose this objective because it seems a bit silly, but there are many occurrences where people do not abide by the proper use to safety belts. I do not just mean adults when I refer to this, but the actual proper placement of safety belts on infants and adolescents. There are often times that infants and young children are injured severely in automobile accidents due to the poor placement and use. The goal of my objective is to increase proper use and constant use of safety belts which are there for multiple resources. Since 2009 the objective baseline was at 84 and since 2019 it was at 90, which does not seem to be too much of a gap. The percentage of the baseline is high, thankfully, but it is still 10% less than 100%, which is what the ideal goal should be.
The objective target goal is 92% and the target setting method is within 10% improvement. This I do believe is achievable. In the past decade it has risen almost 10% and with proper education I do believe that is possible. The goal is not too ambitious as there is proof that over the years it has continue to increase and there is nothing set for a specific amount of time, so I do believe that there is a possibility of a 2% increase even in the next year.

Share with the class the goal of your chosen objective.
In this discussion I have chosen mental health and mental disorders for my topic and objective. The goal stated for mental health in (Healthy People 2020 Mental Health and Mental Disorders, 2020) is to improve mental through prevention and accessing appropriate, quality mental health services needed for recovery and treatment. In my opinion I believe this goal is achievable to the research that has been conducted and resulted. The is a defined area of need and specific to population. (Healthy People 2020 Mental Health and Mental Disorders, 2020) states that there is understanding how the brain functions under normal condition and its response to stress, along with how the brain develops over time. Areas that have been identified are preventive interventions and childhood interventions that are cost affective, and School-based violence prevention can reduce the base rate of aggressive problems in an average school by 25 to 33 percent. The government implement health reform legislation including substance use disorder and prevention services.

Catastrophic events

Workers or volunteers can suffer from multiple risks, such as psychological trauma, illness from disease, injuries from falls or electrical hazards, and heat (CDC, 2014). Many of the recommendations from the CDC are to have immunizations up to date, drink safe water or boil it before drinking, take extra precautions in flood zones with electrical equipment, etc.
A good injury prevention practice would be to require all volunteer or disaster workers to take a health and safety training before leaving to ensure all concerns are addressed, as well as the workers or volunteers are aware of what they can do in case something happens to them. Additionally, giving them information on ways to cope with stress and other mechanisms.

1. In 2017, there had been catastrophic event that happened such as the 7.1 Earthquake in Mexico 2018 and multiple Category 5 Hurricanes by Florida and Puerto Rico and Wild Fires in California. These natural disasters caused injuries and death to the people that lived in the areas affected. The United States deployed federal workers, first responders, public health workers, volunteers, and military personnel to aid the people that were affected.
2. Based on this scenario, what type of injury or harm can affect the responders who are helping and working in the calamity zone?
According to the CDC, the rate of occupational injury and illness for those who volunteer at their local fire department agency has elevated. “ Approximately 88,000 firefighters are injured each year; about 2,000 of their injuries are potentially life-threatening (CDC 2020). Based on this scenario, there are all types of injuries that affect the responders woken in the calamity zone. The most common include: overuse strains, sprains and fractures often caused by stress. Many of these injuries are more common in the lower extremities or back as well as shoulders.
3. What type of injury prevention program is needed to protect these workers.
Injury prevention programs to protect these workers involve peer support groups, community or family groups and therapy. These types of workers can be struggling not only physically but mentally as well. For an example, many first responders struggle with PTSD and have a hard time addressing that with others. Firstrespondersfirst is a website that connects workers with peer groups, physicians, psychologists, as well as crisis centers. They focus on the mental care of workers for the most part.

1. Share an interesting information that you have learned in class related to injury prevention.
The most interesting piece of information that I have learned in this class has been the hierarchy of control and how it is utilized in the workplace.
1. Why is that information interesting and useful to you?
This information is interesting and useful to me because I have suffered, what I now know is a very common injury, in the workplace for pharmacy technicians. Through my research for the hierarchy of control paper, I found several resources that provided information about how employers analyze and evaluate injuries and injury prevention. Through this course, I was able to learn the proper way to address potential injuries and how to identify if I am putting myself at risk in the workplace. I spent half of 2020 on worker’s compensation due to a work-related injury and I found it was difficult to navigate the steps I had to take to treat my injury. I have found that there are several sources of evidence to support how common and known my injury is in the pharmaceutical industry.
1. How can you use that information in your life or future career plans?
I can use this information in the future to help my co-workers become aware of the risks that we are exposed to at work. I can also help educate people on how to identify what they need to change to potentially prevent themselves from suffering a similar injury.

This class provided a lot of information on the number of injuries that happen to the public, most importantly awareness of how much public health attempts to do to prevent these injuries. This includes the Haddon Matrix, and a careful look at how attempts are made at all phase levels when it comes to preventing injury.
Prior to this class I did not pay much attention to safe sidewalks and areas for people to walk, or how much efforts are made to prevent teen distracted driving or how Cal-OSHA is involved in so many citations with employers that do not follow protocols for safety for their employees or patients. It has made me more aware of surroundings and efforts to make areas or environments safer.
