DEFINITION
A sustainable transportation system is one in which fuel consumption, vehicle emissions, safety, congestion, and social and economic access are of such levels that they can be sustained into the indefinite future without causing great or irreparable harm to future generations of people throughout the world.
Efficient Travel
| High-Impact Travel | | Low-Impact Travel |
| Inefficient Unnecessarily large engines, airplanes, and idling vehicles all waste fuel. | | Efficient Appropriately sized engines, used only when necessary |
| Individual Empty seats are wasted opportunities. All multiple-occupancy vehicles are most efficient when fully occupied. | | Group Full trains and busses are among the most efficient vehicles, while empty trains and busses are among the least. |
| Gas-powered Most traditional transportation relies on carbon emissions, including electric trains powered by coal-burning plants. | | Renewable Energy Innovative technology, such as electric cars, as well as the more old-fashioned bicycle |
