DISCUSSION BOARD: EVALUATING RESEARCH & WRITING
TIPS AS YOU HEAD TOWARD DISSERTATION
LITERATURE REVIEW/HYPOTHESES
In a dissertation you are proving through the lit review that you are an expert on the topic
The main emphasis in a lit review is synthesis (examining findings/trends ACROSS research)
Expectations: Paraphrasing (avoiding direct quotes), organization
(transitions and headings), and scholarly tone are expected
THINGS YOU CAN DO NOW
• Learn everything about your topic (read, read, read) • Obsess over it☺
Look at limitations of previous studies to establish a gap and RQ
Use opportunities in classes to read and write about your topic
Increase synthesis in your writing Use the Writing Studio often Apply feedback and improve with each class!
METHODS
Dissertations must be quantitative in nature (numbers, numbers, numbers)
Must logically test your hypothesis (using known scales and other measures)
THINGS YOU CAN DO NOW
Investigate scales available that can measure your variables
Consider recruitment and number of participants needed Where will your participants come from? How much time will it take? Recruitment is not a passive process- plan in advance for ways to reach out to potential
participants
Data collection must be approved by IRB- consider ethical concerns in your plan Permissions to recruit Special populations (for example, children)
Look into ways of distributing your surveys (online)- SurveyMonkey, etc.
RESULTS/DISCUSSION
Statistical analysis of your data SPSS
Jamovi
R
Interpreting your findings Was the hypothesis supported?
Linking findings to previous research
Discussing limitations
THINGS YOU CAN DO NOW
Know your measurements well Look into accessing and scoring
Take it and score yourself!
Visualize your hypothetical results This is very helpful before you collect data
Decide to embrace stats;) You don’t have to know all the stats in the world but focus on being comfortable with the ones you need There are tons of resources for stats online (Research Gate, YouTube videos, etc)
Read and watch everything!
HELPFUL TIPS FOR DISSERTATION
• Focus on critically examining your work and ideas • play devil’s advocate • imagine potential issues/problems and come up with solutions • be able to logically defend every decision
•Apply feedback •The number 1 make it/break it element
•Embrace the dynamic aspect of research •Be willing to make changes
