Week 6 Homework Assignment #1 (Chapter 6 parts A – C)

Answer the following Statistical Application Questions from Chapter 6:

1. Determine whether the following data is continuous or discrete:

a. A station wagon weighs 3478.6 lb;

b. On the last CQE exam 800 people passed.;

c. Out of 300 steel rods, 12 proved to be defective.;

d. A heat treatment lasted 6 hours and 18 minutes.

2. What measurement level is most appropriate for the following:

a. Defects are categorized as critical, major A, major B, and minor.;

b. The individual weights of a sample of widgets.;

c. A report illustrating all shipping codes for last week’s orders.;

d. The temperature of steel rods (degrees Fahrenheit) after one hour of cooling.

3. Find the mean, median, and mode of the following data set: 5, 3, 7, 9, 8, 5, 4, 5, 8

4. What are the advantages/disadvantages of using the median for statistical analysis?

5. Explain the position of the mean and median in a skewed right distribution. Why?

6. Explain the central Limit Theorem.

Table 1:

7. Use the data in table 1 to determine , and R for each sample across X1 – X5.

8. Create a histogram for the sample data in column X5, table 1. Describe the characteristics and implications of the shape of the distribution.

9. Find the probability that Z lies between 1.22 and 2.55. P(1.22 < Z < 2.55). Follow example 6.2, p327.

10. Construct Box Plots for the sample data in columns X1, X3, and X4. Give the five-number summary for each box plot and describe each box plots characteristics. Which box plot shows the least variation, and which shows the most variation.

11. Using the standard normal distribution, with a mean of 150 and a standard deviation of 20, find the probability of a student weighing more than 170 lb.
