Classical Ballet
Shift in the royal courts – Russia’s desire to westernize their courts
Russia became the center for technical training and pushed the boundaries of the dancers technical training
Emphasis on aerial work, pointe work, turns and leg beats (batterie)
Movement Vocabulary more elaborate and technical-less character acting
Stage Sets were simpler
Symphonic use of large groups of people (corps de ballet)
Classical Tutu much shorter the the Romantic-better to see the legs
Classical Ballet
Marius Petipa (1822-1910)
Arrived in Russia in 1847 from France.
Choreographer of the Imperial Ballet in St. Petersburg and has often been referred to as, “the father of classic ballet”
As a choreographer, he created over 60 full-length ballets…some of which are: “Don Quixote,” “La Bayadere,” The Sleeping Beauty,” and “Bluebeard.”
Worked with composer Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky

Use of Dancers in Classical Ballet:
Principals – the leading role in the ballet
The main focus of the ballet and are in the story from the beginning to the end
Soloists – have solo and character roles
Corps de ballet – the remaining members of the ballet company

Grand pas de deux (step for two)
Begins with the entrance of the male and female dancers who then perform an adagio (slow duet)
Variations for each dancer starting with the male
Technically demanding work – aerial and pointe work
Final Coda a duet with the lead dancers
In the duets the male supports the female dancer through the difficult turns, balances, and lifts
