ASHLEY RESPONSE:

Epidemiology is the study of the distribution and determinants of disease in human populations (Schmidt & Brown, 2019). Distribution deals in the pattern of disease occurrence in and among populations and subgroups while determinants are factors that can bring a change in health (Schmidt & Brown, 2019). Epidemiology can correlate with the Healthy People as a way to promote health in the population. Epidemiologic methods deal with incidences, distribution and possible control of diseases and factors related to health, it is therefore used to evaluate the Healthy People objectives such as reducing or eliminating illness, disability, and premature death. One of the main topics that interest me is the ways in which one can prevent and treat infectious diseases. Many people in the United States get sick and die from infectious diseases each year which is why Healthy People in 2030 are transitioning their focus on preventions and treatments for any type of infectious disease. Under this topic, there was a study based on pertussis among infants. Infants are easy targets to get sick merely because their immune system is underdeveloped. Pertussis (whooping cough) can cause serious illness in babies, children, teens, and adults (CDC, 2017). The primary goal of the study is giving women the Tdap vaccine during pregnancy to help protect their babies from pertussis. This is a descriptive study to understand each viewpoint. Descriptive study is used to identify subgroups in populations that may have the highest risk for a specific disease or outcome. This study is used to find clues about potential causes of diseases so that nurses can generate hypotheses about the relationship between different exposures and diseases or other health-related outcomes (Schmidt & Brown, 2019). The goal is to identify ways in which one can prevent pertussis in infants younger than 2 months since they can’t yet get vaccinated. The advantage of this study is it looks at the most recent case studies, target cases, desired direction, and baseline of infants younger than 1 years old with cases of pertussis. The disadvantage is that it is very limited information since it is under the “baseline only” category. The “baseline only” category is based on the initial baseline which means researchers from the Healthy People 2030 are not sure if there has been any progress with their goals for pertussis prevention.

Healthy People 2020 objectives for access to healthcare for people with conditions like diabetes, heart disease, stroke, blood disorders, and mental health disorders are evaluated using epidemiological methods, which include preventative measures such as engaging with the community through the work of health workers (Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, 2019). Special programs for specialized requirements, where individuals may participate in supplemental programs - especially women who are pregnant or breastfeeding - can also provide access to healthcare services. The Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, 2019) describes these treatments and tools as "evidence-based practices" that include "consumer information availability at any time." In addition to the waiting time, treatment time, and boarding time in emergency departments, accessibility to oral care health for underprivileged people can be improved (Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, 2019). Patient satisfaction declines, causing these patients to leave before being seen, causing major delays in the quality of service. Understanding coverage, service, and timeliness based on an individual's ethnicity, socioeconomic status, age, sex, disability status, sexual orientation, gender identity, and residential location all have a huge role in the type of care they receive (Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, 2019)
