Getting Started

This exercise will continue the use of journaling, which is a very important part of “doing philosophy.” There are a number of things you will be required to have in your journal each week; however, you may add anything you want. This is as much to benefit you as it is for part of your grade. We hope that you will continue to journal on a regular basis through your academic journey. In your journal, you will respond to the weekly journal assignment and record your answers to the assigned worldview questions from Chapter 1.

You are also required to answer the study questions at the end of each of the assigned chapters in preparation for taking the weekly quiz. Finally, your journal is the place for you to record any observations about life, reality, and philosophy during this course.

Upon successful completion of this assignment, you will be able to:

· Reflect upon your understanding of the concept of a worldview and philosophical ideas concerning art and history.

Resources

· Textbook: A Christian Philosophical Journey

· A Standard Translation of the Bible as noted in the syllabus.

Instructions

1. Review the rubric to make sure you understand the criteria for earning your grade.

2. Using the  Week 5 Worldview Questions and End of Chapter Questions Template , respond to the following questions:

a. In addition, ask yourself: Does beauty have any foundations in God’s divine nature? How is beauty defined with a “value,” like goodness or truth (or can it be)? Do we need beauty (aesthetics) to survive in life?

b. In addition, ask yourself: Does God have anything to do with human history (events, revelation, influence)? Who determines what history is recorded, of all of earth’s past events? Does history really “repeat itself”? [Note: Try to find the exact quote about this notion on the Internet]. Do you make history by living your life? How and why?

c. Questions 1–6, Chapter 13 (pp. 288–289)

d. Questions 1–5, Chapter 14 (p. 321)

e. Questions 1–3, Chapter 15 (p. 343)

f. Worldview Question #8 (Chapter 1, page 6): What makes something beautiful? What is truly art and what is not? What constitutes good art? Is beauty truly in the eye of the beholder?

g. Worldview Question #9 (Chapter 1, page 6): Where is history headed? Is history simply a cycle of similar events repeating themselves? Is history headed toward a particular set of climactic events? Is the future alterable, or we simply playing out an inevitable scenario?
