Great Story Ideas

Prepare Icon

Prepare: Aspiring journalists typically dream of delivering stories that will be remembered for years to come. In reality, the story may be remembered, but the person who wrote it may be long forgotten due to the days of short coverage where every piece of news seemingly has an equal chance at being breaking news. With the saturation of mediated technology, those stories that truly are stories will be remembered, and the journalists who write them are often hailed for their work.

Reflect Icon

Reflect: Search your favorite print, digital, or broadcast publication for an enterprise story. What is your level of engagement with the story? What journalistic style elements are used by the writer to keep the attention of the audience?

Write Icon

Write: Now that you have critically examined the story, write a 250- to 300-word response that discusses your level of engagement and the journalist style used by the writer. In your initial post, you must include at least one in-text citation from the reading material and an additional in-text citation from a scholarly source that you locate in the Ashford University Library or from another credible source. At the end of your post, include your name and a full reference for all sources cited in the body of your post. All citations and references must adhere to APA style guidelines as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. .

Respond to Peers: After you have written your initial post, read the posts of your peers and respond to at least two others about how engaged they were in the stories they read and the style elements they identified. Your responses should address them by name, be between 100 and 150 words in length, and you must include your name at the end of each response.
