USING THE LIBRARY ASSIGNMENT

(Assignment instructions are on the next page – but please do this first)

Using your library is easy.

· The library can be located on the home page.

· Go to the class and click on the top link

· Go down until you see Troy University Library in blue and underlined (about half-way down) Click on this. Now you will see a lot of options that may be overwhelming, but I am going to discuss just one way to search. There are many ways and also some great staff members to help, but when it comes down to it the more you use the library the easier and quicker it gets. You will eliminate the need to critique web sites to determine if your source is appropriate because ALL peer-reviewed journal articles are appropriate.

· You will see a search box at the top.

This week you are going to be asked to pick a topic. You will be stuck with this topic for a couple weeks so make it one you are interested in (I will discuss this later, but for now follow my example).

Let’s say I was asked to research aggression. I can simply type in aggression in the search box. Now this will give me a ton of options. Way too many to search through. So, I follow the next steps to limit this search by adding some criteria.

· See the below the search box (peer-reviewed) (available in library collection)

· Click on available (as there in nothing worse than finding an article you want to use but not having access to it).

· Now click on peer reviewed (this is important in making sure you article is credible/academic in nature).

You will notice this eliminated a lot but there are still way too many to work with. Depending on your topic this may not always be the case. Now 150,000 is still way too many. If you look to the left, you will see a column that allows you to narrow your search further. First, change date range. I always select within the last ten years, but some say three years max. I also click on just academic journals. You will notice peer reviewed is already selected from your previous selection.

Aggression is a very broad topic getting 500,000 plus results. Now even with adding the dates and journals I have over 70,000. I could always be more specific like “verbal aggression”, female, adolescent acts of aggression” or “indirect aggression” (which gets less than 3,000 results). I may get none or just a few options. I always like to start broad and get more specific as I go. I rather get too many than none at all.

ASSIGNMENT

For this assignment you are to select a topic of interest. As previously noted, you will be stuck with this topic for the next couple week so make sure to choose wisely. Once topic is selected go to library and search for five peer-reviewed journal articles published within the last ten years on your topic.

You will notice when you click on an article it gives the information. If you look to the right side of the screen there is a tools box. The sixth item down is “cite”. Click on cite. Since we are using APA you want to click look in the pink box for APA (3rd one down). You can then copy and paste the reference on a word doc. For example, an article:

Boutin, S., Verlaan, P., Denault, A.-S., & Déry, M. (2017). Early Risk Predictors of Girls’ Indirect Aggression from Childhood to Early Adolescence in an At-Risk Sample. Sex Roles, 76(3–4), 175–187. https://doi-org.libproxy.troy.edu/10.1007/s11199-016-0656-4

Now these references are not always perfect and that is why it is so important to learn APA in this course. These tools are great for gathering information, but you cannot depend on them to give you proper APA format. For example, in the reference above only the first word in the title should have caps. It doesn’t copy double spaced or with the hanging indent, so I still need to go in and make some corrections, so it is correct. See below:

Boutin, S., Verlaan, P., Denault, A.-S., & Déry, M. (2017). Early risk predictors of girls’ indirect aggression from childhood to early adolescence in an at-risk sample. Sex Roles, 76(3–4), 175–187. https://doi-org.libproxy.troy.edu/10.1007/s11199-016-0656-4

You may want to refer to the APA manual pages 316-319 for more assistance.

KEEP THESE FIVE ARTICLES AS YOU WILL NEED THEM FOR NEXT WEEK

This assignment should be submitted to the courseroom as a word doc containing both the original citation (from library) with errors and the corrected version. You should have a total of five incorrect and five correct sources. You should also tell me what your search criteria (topic) was.

So, your paper should look something like this (with five sources not just one):

I selected to research aggression but came up with too many search results. I changed my topic to indirect aggression. With this search I found five articles that I think would help me if I was doing a research paper on this topic. They are as follows:

· Boutin, S., Verlaan, P., Denault, A.-S., & Déry, M. (2017). Early Risk Predictors of Girls’ Indirect Aggression from Childhood to Early Adolescence in an At-Risk Sample. Sex Roles, 76(3–4), 175–187. https://doi-org.libproxy.troy.edu/10.1007/s11199-016-0656-4

Boutin, S., Verlaan, P., Denault, A.-S., & Déry, M. (2017). Early risk predictors of girls’ indirect aggression from childhood to early adolescence in an at-risk sample. Sex Roles, 76(3–4), 175–187. https://doi-org.libproxy.troy.edu/10.1007/s11199-016-0656-4

While you don’t need to read these articles yet, look through them. This week we learned about how articles are laid out (see the assigned readings for this week). Understanding where to find information in journal articles can save you a lot of time.

If you do try and read the article consider the following: You may be overwhelmed. Don’t panic. There is often a lot of statistical type stuff that may be confusing. Try reading the introduction first. Do you understand the purpose of the research? Then read the conclusion. What did they discover from this research? Now review the middle. It may make more sense if you understand those two things first.
