I selected this topic because the experiences of women veterans and how they integrate into society after military service is relevant to social psychology. The articles I selected support the gap in literature and the common theme is their mention of a need for further research specific to women veterans because the literature predominantly focuses on male veterans. Boros and Erolin (2021) state that the current literature about veterans’ focuses on the physical and mental symptoms and the factors that influence the need for professional help, rather than on social factors and experiences. Boros and Erolin (2021) also report that more research is needed on women veterans needs and experiences because most of the available literature focuses on male veterans. Orazem et al. (2017) also supports the need for further research on women veterans, and specifically points to a need for more research on veteran identity adjustment during civilian reintegration. In Verkamp (2021), the author found there to be a wide gap in the literature regarding veterans’ lived reintegration experiences, identity loss, and adjustment to civilian life after military service. Mitchel et al. (2020) and Strong et al. (2018) both indicate in their articles a need for further research on veteran identity to inform interventions. Combined, the literature I found supports the gap in knowledge necessary for me to continue pursuing my current dissertation topic. Zordia . Searched the Walden university library data base Key search words utilized: Native parenting, American native parenting, child development, evidenced based child programs, cultural competence, native American or American Indian or indigenous or native tribes or native people, parenting styles and child development. Program of study and relevance of articles selected My program area is developmental psychology in child and adolescent development. My dissertation research question is how to native American experience taking parenting classes that were not created for their culture. In order to understand this, I feel that a background of information needs to be explored, to unravel the reasons why evidenced based practices may not be working within Indian country. There are so many articles to choose from and I narrowed it down to these five for the purpose of this discussion. BigFoot, D., & Funderburk, B. (2011). Honoring Children, Making Relatives: The Cultural Translation of Parent-Child Interaction Therapy for American Indian and Alaska Native Families. Journal of Psychoactive Drugs, 43(4), 309–318. https://doi.org/10.1080/02791072.2011.628924 This article explains the importance of honoring children and making their relatives cultural role models and integrating parent child interaction therapy to health generational trauma  (BigFoot, et at., 2011). Bradley, R. H. (2019). Home Environment and Self‐Efficacy Beliefs among Native American, African American, and Latino Adolescents. Family Process, 58(2), 418–430. https://doi.org/10.1111/famp.12363 This article explores how home life environments affect child development and self-efficacy beliefs  (Bradley, 2019). Creighton, X. C. B. (2018). Native American Women Parenting Off Reservations: A Phenomenological Study. Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies. Maternal & Child Health Journal, 12, 91–102. https://doi.org/10.1007/s10995-008-0370- This article discusses the affects that violence has on social and emotional behavior problems with children  (Probst, et al., 2008). Although this article was not published within the last 10 years, I believe it to be relevant an important study to include due to the information that it provides.
