Forum 2 - Activities Director

In the church that I attend, I am not the youth director, but I am close friends with the youth director. The youth director in my church holds several different roles including guidance counselor, activities director and educator. She helps to guide the youth of the church in their walk with Christ as well was with their walk through navigating the difficulties of growing up. Half of the time in youth group is spent sharing about school life and topics that come up in life and the other half of the time is a Bible study to help with the development of the class. There are also many activities that are done in the church with the youth to include laser tag, paintball, nerf wars, and bonfires. All these events have a biblical component to them, even if they do not start out that way. The youth director wants to be able to relate to the students and gain their trust and then disciple them in the ways of Christ. The job that our youth director has is exceedingly difficult, but she does it well. She also has several people to help her as there are about 20 to 25 youth students at any given event or night group. Each of the helpers have been trained and handle a small group of the students when the time comes to break down into smaller groups for prayer or lesson time. This is how the youth group has been run for a quite a while and we consistently have students stay within our church for the whole time they are in the area. Even after the students go to college, they come back to the church during breaks and the summers to spend time with friends and family. Our church is a close-knit family of believers. It is not hard to see why the youth come back when they build such strong bonds. As a youth director, it is important to make an impact on the next generation. I feel that our youth director does that and if I am ever in the position where I am able to take over, I would do the same thing as the previous director. One improvement would be more outreach into the community and the schools to have more students come and be a part of the church. so much relies on students bringing other students but I think with mine and the several helpers, many more students could come to know Jesus and spend time in the church with other students outside of school.

Arnita,
I like the two roles you describe for yourself in youth ministry, spiritual leader and mentor. I would call it doing 'life' with students. Teens today have all kinds of information from their phone, but they do not have relationships that offer wisdom and critical thinking. When we have relationships with teenagers, we can earn their trust which allows us to speak into their life and offer them wisdom and help them learn to think critically about all the information that comes at them.
