100 word – constructive response

The first article that I chose was in relationship to Aurora’s social deviance in society topic.  I have always found deviance to be interesting because what appears to be deviant to one person, is not deviant to another.  It is what society constructs deviance to be over the years based on social norms.  For example, marijuana is becoming more accepted as it is becoming legal in more and more states.  Five years ago, this would be completely viewed as deviant.  Many people do still view it as deviant, but it is more widely accepted.  The article that I chose is Deviant Behavior Problem in Modern Society.  Aurora talked about how deviant behavior can lead to crime.  In the article that I chose, it specifically discusses a deeper interest in deviant behavior in childhood and how it can evolve into crime in adulthood.   Deviant behavior is a deviation from the boundaries between normal and abnormal which tends to lead to crime and deeper deviance as a child turns into an adult.

I chose gender identity as the second part of this forum because often times, people who struggle with their identity are viewed as deviant and my teenagers and I have friends that identify themselves as another gender or are lesbian and gay. The second article that I chose is Normal Queers: Straight Parents Respond to Their Children's Coming Out.  In this article it refers to gender identity as gender identity deviance.  Parents view their children as deviant because they are no longer blending with social norms.  Parents believe that their moral standings are at risk and they themselves may reject their children, in turn, the adolescents may react with deviant behavior in defiance.

Deviance with gender identity is becoming more accepted in our society.  People are less likely to see it as something morally wrong.  As a sociologist I believe that acceptance into society regardless of which gender you are attracted to needs to change.  People who struggle with gender identity are still people should not be rejected by friends or family.  Deviance is a social norm and LGBTQ community has been seen as deviant until recently as more social norms are beginning to change.
