The Study on Dialysis and Patients with Kidney Failure

The Topic

In today’s society dialysis patients makes up a large amount of the population around the world. They are all treated by nephrologists who are medically license to care for them. The view point of it all is the fact that these doctors rely on dialysis to insure survival for patients with end stage renal disease. End stage renal disease is when the kidney loses the ability to function at a normal level, meaning the filter waste that humans consume in their bodies does not clean the blood anymore which causes the body to build up toxins and poison that could cause death. The body becomes overloaded with toxins, leaving the patient with no choice but to start dialysis or find someone to donate them a kidney. In reality many patients have survived through dialysis, but it is very difficult for them to live a normal life.

The Controversy

In the United States today there are more people with kidney disease. The clinical facilities are getting overloaded because so many people are getting the disease Doctors are working overtime to make sure all patients receive the best care. Unfortunately, it is becoming overwhelming for the healthcare providers because there are not enough nurses to care for them. Leading many patients to do home dialysis instead, but the down play to this method is the fact that they must be accompanied by a family member or friend. All individuals must be trained to perform the treatment. Research has suggested that home dialysis would give the patient better care. However there are some barriers to accessing home dialysis because it can really be very expensive cost and more difficult to perform the necessities for the patient. Additionally, this smaller patient population (compared with in-center dialysis patients), along with modality failure resulting in a transfer to in-center hemodialysis, makes it more difficult to obtain strong, clear outcomes data for home dialysis modalities (Rocco, 2017). Pro Side Controversy

There are two types of dialysis and they are hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. The effect of but are equally, so the options is left up to what is best for the patient. However, there are some characteristics that make one option more suitable for certain patients (Smith, 2017). The primary advantage of hemodialysis is the fact that the patient must go three times a week for treatment at a clinic for at least 3 to 5 hours depending on the doctor’s orders. The treatment hemodialysis is carried out in a medical facility, so patients must travel there throughout the week for their treatments. However, training for hemodialysis at home may allow the treatments to be taken at home. Hemodialysis is a choice for people who feel that they will receive the best care at the center and would not want to do it at home. Patients who do Hemodialysis must follow a strict fluid limit and a diet plan. The advantage of peritoneal dialysis is increased comfort and ease of use, as the dialysis can be carried out at home, without the need for regular visits to a medical clinic for the dialysis to occur. The equipment that is used is less bulky than that of hemodialysis and can be transported with the individual if they wish to travel or relocate.

Con Side of the Controversy

Peritoneal dialysis needs to be carried out every single day, which is not a good advantage because many people find it very hard to maintain. Many people feel the presence of a catheter in the abdomen, which is left there permanently is irritating and very disturbing. Catheters in the abdomen can become quickly infected causing serious infections. These complications may lead to a switch to hemodialysis in center treatments for some patients... Peritoneal dialysis is also associated with a reduction in protein levels in the blood, which may lead to the presentation of symptoms such as fatigue, weight gain, and malnutrition (Smith, 2017).

Tentative Thesis Statement

Dialysis is the number one treatment for people with kidney failure. From my findings a person is giving life again and although it may seems to be complicated to the patient’s life. Kidney failure is not a death sentence, but a matter of doing what it takes to survive.
