Paragraph Outline Worksheet—5-8 detailed sentences per paragraph

1. Introductory paragraph:

a. Begin with a sentence introducing title and author of the essay you are interpreting.

b. Write a 4-7 sentence summary of the essay your selected essay.

c. End your introductory paragraph with your thesis statement from the Week 1 proposal worksheet ( Author’s last name, brief essay topic, effective/not effective, three rhetorical modes, main idea of essay.) (Ex: Lepucki’s essay about mothers is effectively written using the description, narration, and compare and contrast rhetorical writing strategies to show that a woman’s life experiences do not change her individual identity.

2. Body paragraph detailing the first rhetorical mode:

a. Start with a topic sentence introducing the first rhetorical mode from the thesis statement.

(Ex: Description is the first rhetorical writing mode Lepucki successfully uses to provide visual and sensory details about the mothers who are highlighted in her essay.)

b. Provide evidence from the essay that illustrates rhetorical mode being used (use a signal phrase and an APA in-text citation). (Ex: For example, Lepucki (2017/2022) claims that in her mother’s photograph, “She looks really sexy; wars have been waged over less impressive waist-to-hip ratios. And she is so young and innocent” (p. 986).

c. Explain how/why the essay evidence illustrates the rhetorical mode.
