MGT 460: Leadership Priorities & Practice

COURSE DESCRIPTION Leadership Priorities and Practice is a capstone course that requires students to

reflect on and synthesize the major insights gained in their study of

organizational management. A substantive paper is developed to illustrate how

these insights can be applied effectively in the student’s work environment.

Students choosing the personal program of study must show how their chosen

concentration relates to organizational management and include insights from

each academic area in their synthesis and application.

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Examine how values and ethics are reflected in professional

practices and behaviors. 2. Evaluate situations from a multidisciplinary perspective. 3. Apply systematic and innovative approaches to decision-

making and problem solving. 4. Integrate leadership theory and professional practice through

applied problem-solving activities. 5. Analyze the role of the leader in promoting organizational

effectiveness, efficiency, and sustainability.

SELF-LEADERSHIP - DEFINED Self leadership is the ability of someone to guide themselves to positive places that they have never been before. It enables a person to fulfill their potential while building a strong foundation from which to make daily decisions -- both professionally and personally. Without a strong sense of self-leadership, people can feel out of control, overwhelmed and unfocused. (Bommelje, 2009, p. 1).

EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE

Mayer, Salovey and Caruso (2004) define emotional intelligence (El) as the capacity to reason about emotions, and of emotions to enhance thinking. It includes the abilities to accurately perceive emotions, to access and generate emotions so as to assist thought, to understand emotions and emotional knowledge, and to reflectively regulate emotions so as to promote emotional and intellectual growth. (p. 198)

MENTORING VERSUS COACHING

According to Chakravarthy (2011), the main difference

between mentoring and coaching is the focus.

Mentors focus on the individual and his or her general

work life. The focus is on attitudes and behaviors.

Coachs focus on the task. A coach helps with attitudes

skills, and behaviors related to job success

(Chakravarthy, 2011).

ACTION LEARNING

Another key term that is associated with mentoring and coaching is “action learning.” Davis, Doran, Hutchinson, and Provost (2012) defined action learning as an organizational process designed to create continuous quality improvements Action learning is an effective process used to integrate learning and teaching (Davis et al., 2012)
