Direction of Light

Some Vocabulary

Plan – Top View of Light Plot or Set Drafting

Section – Center cut Side View of Light Plot or Set Drafting

Acting area: Where the action of the play takes place.

Lighting Areas: Where the light hits the actor/stage

8

House Plan

9

House Section

Acting area: Where the action of the play takes place.

Lighting Areas: Where the light hits the actor/stage

Beam angle: That point in the cone of light emitted by an instrument where the light is diminished by 50 percent when compared with the out put of the center of the beam

Field Angle: That point in the cone of light where the output diminishes to 10 percent of the output of the center of the beam

Beam & Field Overlap

Light Plot and Photometrics

Light Plot

To Create a light plot you need the following:

A ground plan of scenic design

A sectional of the scenic design

A ground plan of the stage and auditorium

A sectional of the stage and auditorium

The layout of the lighting system

Fly rails, Grids, Electric Positions.

Theater’s lighting equipment inventory

More Vocabulary

Working Sectional: a drawing showing the sectional angle for a lighting instrument that you will use to calculate the throw distance, hanging position, and beam angle

Throw Distance – How far light from an instrument travels from its hanging position to the center of its focus area

Hanging Position – Where the lighting instrument is hung

Beam Angle – Determines the lighting instrument needed to illuminate the actor/object.

Photometrics

Next class we will practice calculating photometrics

You will need the following:

Pencil

Architect Ruler

Protractor

Approximate Photometric Information Handout

It’s in your syllabus
