Introduction

Gone are the days where organizations thought a server as a big thing or bulky machines that can only be installed in data centers

As a company we always tasked to find out which one is better i.e. either virtual server or traditional set-up.

A virtual server is a server which shares software and hardware resources with other operating system.

Most organizations are touting server virtualization as the greatest thing an organization can invest. In the past we needed server virtualization to perform every function such as e-mailing, enterprise planning, and e-mail.

Server virtualization have allowed IT departments in various organizations to consolidate multiple servers onto one machine. Kumar, CIO at New York Institute of Technology has indicated that virtual server offers efficiencies when running multiple servers.

Virtual server vs. traditional set-up

Virtual server offers a lot of benefits as compared to traditional set-up these benefits are:

Scalability

Minimal downtime

Security

Simplified management

Disaster recovery

Efficient use of resources (Armstrong, 2007)

Scalability: Rather than Cybixx buying a new hardware every time it is needed they need a new server, with a virtual sever, they will be able to spin up a new server in far less time

Minimal downtime: If Cybixx have to work on host servers they can simply move their virtual server to a new host

Security: In virtual server security is usually centralized through the hypervisor software

Simplified management: With virtual server, Cybixx will be able to log into one of their servers and manage all their servers in that environment

Disaster and recovery: With a virtual server Cybixx will find it easier and faster to restore a failed server

Efficient use of resources: Traditional set-up which is also widely known as physical servers run at the capacity of 25 percent that means it leaves plently of leftover processing power and memory but with virtual server only one sever will be hosting multiple virtual servers

Conclusion

Cybixx need to invest in virtual server as it offers enormous benefits. The only challenges with virtual servers are:

Upfront cost

Require experienced IT personnel

Proper planning (Herington, 2006)

Upfront cost: To set-up Virtual server environment Cybixx need to invest with about $1000. Additionally, the organization need to invest in at least a SAN and two robust hosts

Experienced IT personnel: Due to complexity, virtual server environment proper skillset to avoid future problems

Proper planning: Virtual servers require proper planning to avoid redundancy
