Week 1 Discussion Forum
The vulnerability of the people of Melbourne
The people of Melbourne have been exposed to harsh and hard environmental conditions. This has enabled FEMA and Hazard identification and risk assessment to set up measures to look into the situations. The following observations were observed.
Flooding; this has happens in situations where abnormally water levels especially in dams and Oceans or near where rain fell. This has resulted to more deaths than any other hazards. The government of Brevard through the help of (THIRA) have established measures to reduce more deaths by providing information to the public about the effects of it to the people requested. (Bukvic, 2018).
High rate of rainfall, heavy rains has been witnessed recently been witnessed recently has led to flooding which has rendered many people homeless, thereby causing them to become squatters and others died. Agencies in conjunction with the government have constructed dunes to protect rough surfaces and areas within sea.
Wildfire, fire break out has been observed naturally on the southern parts of this area, this has resulted to the destruction of property and people losing there lives. Through mitigation act, THIRA has put fire extinguishers in mostly affected area in order to prevent it if it occurs.
Pests and diseases, increase in pests such as Rodents and insects have attacked crops of that community, this has led to the lives of people been put under pressure and also has led to starvation. The government of Brevard have passed a scientific knowledge to these people on the best ways handling pests and also the control measures of the same.
Severe heat, this occurs when temperatures exceeds for more than ten degrees Celsius and persists for a longer time. This has led to the harm of humans life, this has resulted to increase in mortality ratio. They have put in place measures that will mitigate the situation, for example advising people to migrate and such for area which are less affected.
Effects of storms, this has resulted due to high winds in the area, it has resulted to damage of homes and business which has rendered many people to becoming homeless. THIRA have put in place measures in which people can migrate freely to less affected areas or the most affected people have been provided with shelter.
