Budget
Describe at least two linkages, i.e., inputs (money provided for in the budget) and outcomes (the goals to be accomplished) in a public safety agency.
Among the important roles of a budget is provision for interior security, as such the budget sets aside allocations to fund various operations within the public safety agency so as to achieve the intended outcomes. One of the linkages between the inputs and outputs in a public safety agency is; funds put in place to compensate officers on receiving their training will be translated to their work dedication and morale thus resulting to positive work out-put in law enforcement. Secondly, the budget caters for equipment and facility upgrade so as to improve on the level of services offered and efficiency of the different departments in delivering results.
For a budget to fund such agencies, itself, requires to be funded. The budget address presented in mid-January by Gov. Steve Beshear, called for egregious cuts within most departments so as to fund the agencies under the Kentucky Justice and public Safety Cabinet. These funds were directed to improving the status of Kentucky public safety services by investing a total of 17 million dollars in drug treatment programs, hiring additional pre-trial and parole officers, training, equipment and facility upgrades. In the long run the outcome included decreasing the state’s prison population, trimming incarceration costs, reducing crime and improving public safety (Michael Brown, 2012).
Provide one clear statement (a concise paragraph), as if you were the Chief, convincing elected officials that one of these outcomes is needed, thus justifying the inputs.
Measurement of performance of a public safety agency will be seen either from a reduced level of crime rates, reduced number of arrests and fines issued and general direct observations of commendable social behavior among others. Clearly, there has been an a positive results in helping ex-convicts re-adjust and fit in back to the society as a result of hiring additional parole officers. Therefore, it would be necessary to increase inputs in the public safety agency as they always translate to positive outcomes.
