Week-1

Respond to the following in a minimum of 175 words: Post a total of 2 substantive responses to classmates

JP response:

The process is the way in which content is received. An example would be a group therapy setting. Each member of the group has the opportunity to speak when it is their turn. Determining whose turn, it is, could be assumed by the passing of a talking stick. The counselor would act as the facilitator of the group; ensuring is a cohesive session. I am excited to be a part of an interpersonal group. I have learned through my experiences, people who share can provide many pieces of gems which I have used in my own healing process. One of the most important actions in the group is participation by each person. Without this participation, the balance of the group is off. The second most important action is to respect each person’s view and story. Groups can easily become a shaming circle without such respect. Regardless of the type of groups, there must be balance. It is important the group leader/facilitator explain to the group the guidelines or boundaries needed to ensure this balance. Also, the goal of the group should be clear.

TA response:

Process and content helps create a group dynamic to bring individuality and help a groups development. Content involves what each person has to say within their own information, thoughts and ideas that they want to share within the whole group while process is the interaction between the group members that help development where connection comes into play. Some general areas to focus on for the first group would be the introduction of the group members, interacting and seeing what everyone has individually to add to the group. Process and content must be balanced regardless of the type of group (Kraus & Hulse-Killacky, 1996). No matter what type of group whether task, psychoeducation, counseling, and psychotherapy the group works together to reach a common goal and when process or content is more overbearing than the other then the dynamic is harder to work with. Making use of specific content questions and specific process questions can help to guide each group in its different forms.
