Why does children obesity continuous to be a public health problem regardless of awareness campaigns?

· We live in a society where we are easily influenced by actions of people or what we see in our day to day lives. During the diagram video, it shows the root of how children are easily influenced by big corporations and our favorable view of a sedentary lifestyles. Big lobbyist wants to keep the control of the food industry by buying out other food and drink companies, so they have the say in what the message is to the consumer. Like if you notice the commercials that are played on kid’s channels, they are fast food or sugary cereals with cartoons on them. This draws the attention of the children in and beg parents to get them this product. When they go to the store, that product has the attention of the kid making them want to have their parents buy it.

In your opinion, how can we encourage people to reduce the consumption of sugary drinks? Please exclude awareness campaigns.

· To be honest, it will forever be a constant battle to education people to reduce the consumption of sugar drinks. I don’t believe in taxing sugar drinks due to the uproar it would cause in the surrounding communities. However, we can increase the prices of sodas in restaurants or stores, to steer away from the consumers buying drinks that contain lots of sugars. Also, we can eliminate sugary drinks from being allowable purchases for food stamps or EBT, that way we can decrease a percentage of the population having or developing obesity.

How can you help make this topic relevant to others in the community?

· I believe that this topic is relevant due to the different foods that people consume. According to the video, our food plays a role in how we act and our moods. If our body is full of processed food, our brain isn’t getting the proper nutrition it needs to fully function. Different foods helps the brain in different areas with the healthy fats and acids.

Regardless of public awareness campaigns on obesity, child obesity is still becoming a major issue.  First is the food children consume, which high sugary drinks and the convenience and locations of unhealthy options contribute to obesity. Local community institutions such as schools are making processed foods the norm and acceptable in daily diets. Children are also not able to get an ample amount of physical activity/engagement, which does not help with having an unhealthy diet. Increasing screen time causes advertisement of unhealthy diets and less physical activity. In conclusion, regardless of campaigns childhood obesity is a result of environmental factors that interfere with healthy childhood lifestyles.

In order to encourage people to reduce consumption of sugary drinks, we should regulate and lower the amount of sugar allowed in each drink.  We should also spend less time marketing soda and spend more time creating advertisements that entice children into choosing the healthier option. In addition, we should also spend more time developing the school food policy. Children spend most of their day in school, so teaching them how to maintain a healthy living from essential employees would motivate children even more. Following, what I can do to make this topic relevant in my community is getting in touch with community leaders and get them involved in our children’s health. Be a role model, children are known for reflecting actions of adults around them. Having an idol to motivate them and cheer them on into showing the effects of healthier eating would really help them out.
