· Read the posts of your peers and discuss their responses to these questions. Focus especially on those who disagree with what you have said and engage in friendly dialogue about the disagreements you have with them.

· Remember that how you choose to address these questions is up to you; there's no required procedure (for instance, you don’t have to answer each in a separate post or anything like that). The main thing is to get thinking and talking about these questions, and I look forward to reading your responses.

PEERS RESPONSE:

Even after reading through the text and looking for inspiration in my day to day life, I’ve found it difficult to pinpoint a specific ethical dilemma and compare it to somewhere else in the world. That being said, I’ll go with discrimination/ equality. Although this is a hot button issue almost always, I have to say that we live in a society that strives to reach a level of equality. Many of us feel that it is a basic human right to be able to have the same rights as our peers, regardless of our sex, race, sexual orientation, economic status, etc. There’s this sense of well if _____ has that right, ____ should be allowed to do that as well. It’s a subject that we see take steps when we look in our history books. Many countries around the world feel differently, and their differences are based off of their cultural beliefs. For example some countries practice genital mutilation in females as a form of birth control. I’m many places in the Middle East, homosexuality is punishable by death. Living in an era in the United States where women have the right to make choices regarding their birth control and where same sex marriage has been legalized, looking at those other cultures beliefs, it’s hard to see how they would want to strip those rights from their citizens. Then we have to remember that that’s part of their culture and view on the world.

I feel like on both sides we are conditioned to believe what we believe. Growing up there was always a focus on the number of freedoms we have in the United States versus other countries. I grew up believing that people are people and regardless of their background they deserve the same basic human rights as others. Reflecting on that, I am sure that there is someone my age who is part of another culture who strongly believes what their cultural beliefs support because they grew up being told those things. What we know and how we behave/ respond to things is a reflection of how we were raised and what we’ve been taught.

Thanks for reading!
