Introduction

The orientation of nurses is crucial in ensuring that they are competent in their new roles and retaining them in those roles. When the orientation and precepting programs are designed to be thorough and detailed, then the result is nurses who are competent and provide quality healthcare services to the patients. The cost of replacing a nurse is much higher than the cost of retaining one. Proper onboarding and orientation will help with retention of nursing staff.

The new hire nurses are reminded through email and text to complete the required online orientation nursing curriculum in order to learn the standard operating protocols of the hospital and become familiar with the new hospital's routine.

The Preceptor and the preceptee have reviewed and revised the HealthStream modules to align the institutions’ vision, mission, values, policies and procedures. Also needed some improvement and consistency in onboarding nurses which will ease the anxiety of the new hires.

Using the correct teaching strategies and learning styles ensures that the orientation is practical. Clinical demonstrations and simulations are effective strategies to use after the completion of online nursing modules because they mirror the policies and procedures of new settings that the nurses will be operating in. The new hire nurses will be confident to deliver safe and quality patient care at the end of an effective orientation program.

Explanation of the importance of interprofessional collaboration with involved stakeholders on your lesson plan changes for future implementation.

Nurse educators play crucial role in working in conjunction with other healthcare professionals and in promoting interprofessional collaboration by their positive leadership (Karam et al. 2018). The importance of collaboration with other disciplines is to enhance patient safety and facilitate improvements. This includes providing support, creating a workplace which is free of discrimination and harassment, and implementing a culture of safety in the organization (Karam et al. 2018). Stakeholders I collaborate include talent specialist from human resources to make the onboarding process is smooth, regulatory officer to ensure the compliance of onboarding and orientation, nurse managers to address the accountability issues, nurse educators to have weekly meetings to provide feedbacks to the preceptors and orientees and develop educational assistance when needed.
