Executive Summary Information technology in healthcare has become more advanced in the current age and this has led to changes in the industry.

In this regard, healthcare systems have improved and thus, organizational competitiveness and performance is at an all time high.

This presentation highlights the various issues and advantages that healthcare enjoys due to information systems used in the industry.

Types of Information Systems and their impact on healthcare information systems

1 A transaction processing system (TPS) is an information system that captures and processes data about business transactions.

A management information system (MIS) is an information system that provides for management-oriented reporting based on transaction processing and operations of the organization.

A decision support system (DSS) is an information system that either helps to identify decision making opportunities or provides information to help make decisions.

These definitions can be useful to help students understand what an information system is in all its varieties and flavors. Depending on the prerequisites of your course, you may want to cover these in more or less detail.

These information systems are however integral in th edelivery of healthcare due to a variety of reasons. For one, they influence the decisions of most healthcare organizations and secondly, they allow for ease of sharing of information between the various departments and therefore, make healthcare delivery better.

Thee technologies therefore have a significant impact on healthcare.

With the growth of e-commerce and e-business, security and privacy have become much more important.

With globalization information systems must comply with security and privacy laws of multiple countries. What if the security laws of one country conflicts with the privacy laws of another?

Various functional areas of an organization may be using Information System plans Effective system development requires detailed planning and team work.

IS designed with specific performance and cost objectives.

These Information Systems influence important areas of an organization and therefore, they lead to improved performed and overall competitiveness.
