Self-Regulation

I think of the term self-regulation to describe a person’s ability to have complete control

and awareness of themselves. This includes the ability to not only control one’s thoughts to avoid

judgement and bias (filter it in a sense), but also includes regulating their actions such as

controlling their facial expressions. Self-regulation also means a person can reflect on their

thoughts and actions and if they did something wrong, they are able to recognize that and correct

themselves to avoid the event from occurring again.

System-1 and System-2

System-1 thinking is a sort of reflex and occurs instinctually for a person without any

process of critical thinking. This form of thinking is used in everyday life from driving as the

textbook described to a more serious event like a dog attack. An instance that I can think of

where I made a System-1 decision was when I was watching over my little brother and left him

for a moment in the living room when I suddenly heard him a thud and he began to cry. My

System-1 decision caused be suddenly run towards him as the only thing on my mind was getting

to him as soon as possible and ensuring that he was okay. This is appropriate to the situation

because his crying triggered me act without taking a moment to process the information and

focused on getting there as quickly as I could with the rush of adrenaline pushing me forward.

System-2 thinking is more focused on processing new information or an unfamiliar

situation and coming to a decision. Unlike System-1. this is not intuitive and involves thinking

on a deeper level. An instance that I can think of where I used System-2 decision making was

when I was making the decision of deciding which nursing program to attend and whether I

should choose Chamberlain or attend the nursing program at Gwinnett College. I was confronted

with two choices and needed to make a huge decision that would determine what course I would

take with my education. This is appropriate to the situation because I’ve never had to choose

between two school choices before and I had to weigh my options and apply my critical thinking

skills to determine which program would be the best decision for me.

Heuristics

Heuristics is a form of thinking that allows us to make a quick decision by avoiding the critical

thinking process and using a previously created decision-making process to make a new

decision. An example of a heuristic in my professional life would be determining a patient’s

diagnosis based off my experience and deciding to make an educated guess from a similar

patient. This may seem like a plus because your able to move forward with treatment sooner and

help the patient recover though using heuristics can lead to error of judgment that could harm the

patient because of the bias and overconfidence. As a result, instead of helping the patient I’m

only harming them and potentially delaying their recovery.

Dominance Structuring

Dominance structuring is having confidence in your decision that you immediately write

off the other options as wrong. Although it is always a good thing to have confidence in oneself,

dominance structuring has the high potential of a person tunnel vision when it comes to decision

making and may be unlikely to listen to others and can’t be reasoned with. This would not only

make them intolerable to deal with, but the impact of their decision could be fatal depending on

the situation it is being applied to. This also hinders their critical thinking process because of the

failure to even consider other options.

Cognitive Bias

When I think of System-1 thinking I perceive it as a thought process that does not involve

facts and data. Therefore, System-1 thinking is solely based on cognitive bias as a person is only

acting on instinct and there is no critical thinking process involved or reflection on the decision

there is only action. If the question were about System-2 thinking I would say the mastery of fact

and understanding of data are critical to avoiding cognitive bias because System-2 thinking is a

deep critical thinking process and involved reflection and a higher level decision making and

planning than Systen-1.
