Data standards make it simpler to create, share, and integrate data by making sure that there is a clear understanding of how the data are characterized and that the data you receive are in a form that you expected. There are three key elements to classifying data for the purposes of cybersecurity. One is cost. It must be determined what is the true value of data. The second is classification. It is vital to create a criterion for determining the classification label. The third is security controls. Establishing and implementing baseline cybersecurity measures for each data classification label is a must. Data should be classified as restricted when the unauthorized disclosure, alteration or destruction of that data could cause a significant level of risk.

Data should be classified as private when the unauthorized disclosure, alteration or destruction of that data could result in a moderate level of risk. Data should be classified as public when the unauthorized disclosure, alteration or destruction of that data would result in little or no risk. On a periodic basis, it is important to reevaluate the classification. The goal of information security is to protect the confidentiality, integrity and availability. HIPPA is a good example. An authentication verifier is a piece of information that is held in confidence by an individual and used to prove that the person is who they say they are such as a password. EPHI is defined as any Protected Health Information ("PHI") that is stored in or transmitted by electronic media.
