As an end user, there are many methods that one can deploy in order to protect digital assets and information. The easiest method is staying up to date. Malicious hackers are always on the lookout for security loopholes that they can use as attack vectors in either gaining access to your system or distributing their malicious code and apps. One such attack vector involves zero-day exploits or unpatched vulnerabilities. It is vital for end users to keep operating systems and other applications updated, as this can help reduce the risk of being attacked through unpatched vulnerabilities.
Another method is to deploy active protection. Web and application servers are a popular target for malicious hackers because these are always online, and always accept traffic and requests sent from the internet at large. Thus, there is also the risk that hackers can find security vulnerabilities on your server itself, or the applications that reside in it. It is important to deploy a web application firewall for the server, which actively blocks potentially harmful traffic, including malicious code, cross-site scripting attacks, SQL code injections, among others.
While some would say that there should be a policy mandate to avoid carelessness, I don’t think there should be one. This would just give the government more control and say over what individuals are and aren’t allowed to do. Protecting digital assets and information should be common sense like locking your door at home and creating a strong password for your bank accounts. Individuals need to take responsibility and make smart decisions regarding their assets.
