COMMUNITY GUIDELINES

We often avoid discussing race, gender, sexual orientation, disability, and class differences.

Why do you think this is the case?

● Code of silence -- pressure to ignore bias

● Politeness protocol -- keep convo superficial, taboo

● Stereotype constraint -- don’t want to appear “-ist”

● Talking about race may threaten to unmask both conscious and unconscious belief systems about

one’s own biases and prejudices

● Avoiding these discussions is detrimental for people, relationships, workplaces, and social progress

There are strategies to help have constructive dialogues about identity, culture, and difference:

● Acknowledge + disclose personal challenges + fears

● Accept likelihood of biased upbringing / socialization

● Recognize the difficulty of dialogue
